Officer aims at dog but bullet hits dog's owner

OKLAHOMA CITY -- For the fourth time in two weeks, investigators with the Oklahoma City Police Department are looking into an officer-involved shooting. This time the shots were fired in the Northwest part of town. Officers were dispatched to 3004 NW 18th on a domestic call just after 5 p.m. Monday.

They were familiar with the occupants since they had been to the home several times on similar calls.

They also knew there was a pit bull in the house who had shown signs of aggression in the past.

We're told when the officer approached the front door and the pit bull charged; the officer fired multiple shots.

One of the bullets ricochet and struck the dog's owner, Arlen Gibson in the chest.

Captain Patrick Stewart with the Oklahoma City Police Department says, "It did not break the skin however it did cause swelling and bruising to that area. He was transported an area hospital where he is listed in good condition."

The dog named Dozer ended up grazed by one of the bullets: it left a bloody gash in the pit bull's shoulder.

Kathy Fleming lives on the property and says she came out to see what was going on when she heard yelling.

That's when she saw the officer fire.

She says, "I'm sorry, whoever he is, I stand behind the police 100 percent, but when it takes them three shots to hit a dog that's less than 50 feet away, something's wrong."

Right now the dog's owner is not facing any charges for his aggressive animal, but that may change.

It's not clear if the officer will be placed on paid administrative leave during this investigation.

I don’t know of many shooting ranges that offer pitbull-sized, moving targets.

Shoot the dog; hang the owner. Or vice versa.

Most cops couldn't hit the ground with a dropped bullet.

This braniac sounds like a real top-notch officer.

Just another example of the 99% giving the 1% a bad name.

I live in OKC and they should take the guns away from the OKC police dept. This is the 4th officer involved shooting in this town in less than 3 weeks. 2 of the shootings were dogs and they ended up shooting people on the ricochet.

According to a now deceased friend who was a deputy sheriff in OKC, up until several years ago the shooters all become members of an “elite” fraternity within the dept - don’t know if thats still the case but it sure makes me wonder.

Unless its a high speed chase or a gunfight, its very hard to get OKC PD to respond to anything.......

Got to love the level of intelligence shown by "pit bull" haters.
Please keep up the kookery, it works in the favor of responsible dog owners.

Barney Fife was harmless and he carried his “bullet” in his shirt pocket. OKC PD carries .45 semi auto - double stack 15 round magazines. They can do a hell of a lot of damage in a hurry.....

They also knew there was a pit bull in the house who had shown signs of aggression in the past.

We're told when the officer approached the front door and the pit bull charged; the officer fired multiple shots.

That's no different from shooting at the officer. When it's neighborhood kids or adults who are chewed up, it's no different from the owner randomly shooting buckshot into the peoples' carcasses for no justifiable reason.

I don't hate the dogs any more than I would a rattlesnake or a mountain lion. They just need to be dispatched resolutely and permanently.

Responsible dog owners don't own pit bulls or any other aggressive breed, and don't allow them to attack people; just as responsible gun owners don't shoot into the carcasses of their neighbors for no justifiable reason.

My question is if the dog showed agression to police during previous calls- why was the dog still around? You would think the police would have already done him in or turned him over to animal control.
