Foyle's War: "Masterpiece Mystery." "The Russian House," 9 p.m. Sun. "Killing Time," 9 p.m. May 9. "The Hide," 9 p.m. May 16, on KQED.
World War II did come to an end in 1945, and so did "Foyle's War," sort of, in 2007. First it was canceled by ITV, proving that idiocy reigns as supremely in British TV as it does so often on these shores. After viewers complained and the supposed finale, "All Clear," drew significant ratings in its 2008 British telecast, ITV wisely saw the error of its ways and came to Horowitz, hat in hand, to ask him to continue the series.
To which we say, "Whew."
"The Russian House," the first of three new "Foyle's," airing Sunday night, easily answers the question of how Horowitz could continue the story line after the "main event" - World War II - was over. The answer is: as deftly as ever.
Call it "Foyle's Post-War" if you like, but with "The Russian House," Horowitz reminds us that war might sharpen the focus on social morality in a supposedly civilized society, but that doesn't mean right and wrong suddenly become more clearly defined after the last shot is fired.

Besides, Honeysuckle Weeks is one of the best names ever in tv.
Thanks...have been looking forward to this. As to ‘Honeysuckle’, I wonder if her parents named her that! LOL! I would think it doubtful she chose it as a stage name!
Good series, had forgotten about it though. Need to get the DVDs on netflix at some point.
It is her real name (I know the family). Her sister is Perdita and her brother is Rollo - both are reasonably successful actors themselves.
After the Francis Urquhart trilogy (House of Cards, To Play a King and Final Cut) Foyle’s War is the next best Masterpiece series. Michael Kitchen is a great actor who also played the king in “To Play a King”...
We’ve got the entire set. It gives an excellent depiction or the reality of war in London/Hastings and the havoc it played with the mentality of the British - rationing, food shortages, fighting against over whelming odds, etc. Plus there’s the great acting and always the mystery to solve.
Thanks! One of the few series both dh and I enjoy.....We rented them all from Netflix. I’ll tell him there is more to come
...now if HBO would continue the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency (another favorite).....
If you enjoy Foyle’s War and want a good guffaw check out a young Kitchen in Dracula, AD 1972. it’s a real hoot.
Great series! Thanks for the heads-up.
All three episodes are up on alt.binaries.british.drama for anyone out there with a usenet account...
They can also be found on torrents...
These last few episodes were a bit too PC for my taste. The previous seasons were far better.
Not only did her parents name her after the flower, she has a sister (who resembles her, praise be) named Perdita!
Thanks for posting...
I liked the few episodes of Foyle I’ve seen.
And it reminds me that I need to get a copy of “Piece of Cake”,
the series on Royal Air Force during The Battle of Britian.
Ah, too bad about the PC, if so. Haven’t seen any of the episodes so far.
Torrents are risky at best. Usenet with an SSL connection is about as safe as it gets, all things considered. Just sayin’...;-)
Honeysuckle’s mom is running for parliament as a Conservative.
