no proof anyone was in danger Yeah, because a barking snarling pit bull runing at you is a safe as a stuffed wabbit!

"Why shoot the dog? Why? Yeah, he was loose or whatever, but he could have called Animal Control."
Yeah - let's call animal control and wait a half hour to an hour while the pit is happily digesting some schoolkid's arm.
Idiot.

Given what’s in the news article, I’d go with the cop on this one.

Police don't know who the kids were. I'm sorry she lost her dog, but it wouldn't surprise me to find out that there's a history of it running loose, and one of the neighbors just got sick of it. A dog off-leash is fair game.

Maintain control of your dog. It’s your responsibility.

So the officer shot the dog, the neighbor says it’s a nice dog, no one knows who the kids were and no one but the officer says in the article it’s aggressive. Hmmmmm.

This is why I carry “Bear” pepper spray with me when I walk my 10 pound dog.
The, “not on a leash but won’t hurt you” excuse only goes so far. I walk with the spray and warn the owner to get the dog or it’s sprayed. Luckily, my dog is breed for agility and can most likely outrun any dog, but my daughters aren’t and can easily be hurt by someone’s “just a puppy”.

I love pits. I have akitas.
I take ten times the precautions with them that I would a regular dog, because I know the legal ramifications.
I’ll sometimes sit on the porch in the middle of the night with them about five feet from me. And I watch the street like a hawk to make sure no one walks down it. That’s the limit of their unleashed freedom. They are good and obedient but that’s part of having a guard breed.
If I had a pit, as sweet as it might be, I would never, never, let it anywhere without a leash.
