Shovel Stops Pit Bull Attack: Update
Published Date: 2010/4/26 12:34:34 Article ID : 7748 Version 1.00.02 By Keven Drews
UCLUELET A 27-year-old Ucluelet man says he was forced to knock out a pit bull with a shovel Saturday night in order to stop an attack on a family pet being walked by two children.
Jesse Stenbaugh told the Westcoaster.ca Monday he heard childrens screams of help, help, while walking home from a friends house near the trailer park on Cynamoka Road at about 8 p.m.
When he ran across the street and arrived on scene, Stenbaugh said he saw the pit bull shaking a golden Labrador retriever about eight months old by the neck.
I just saw this dog shaking this other dog, he said.
A man in a truck arrived on scene, as well.
Stenbaugh said he grabbed a shovel from the truck and tried to stop the attack by shoving the handle up the pit bulls anus and by prying open its jaws.
Neither attempt worked.
Stenbaugh said he then wound up and smashed the dog on its head several times, knocking it out.
The dog was trying to kill the little kids dog, so I hit it on the head with a shovel and knocked it out and stopped the fight right there.
Stenbaugh said he didnt see the pit bulls owners around, doesnt know the children, although he suspects they were about eight and 12 years old, and he doesnt know the man in the truck.
He said the Labrador was in rough shape.
Shortly after knocking out the animal, members of the Ucluelet RCMP arrived, said Stenbaugh.
Const. Ryan Warren, of the Ucluelet RCMP, called the incident a full on, vicious attack.
He said the smaller dog suffered puncture wounds, was taken to a veterinarian and is expected to survive.
He said the attack was so vicious it came in as a cougar attack.
Warren said the pit bull was taken to Port Alberni. The animals fate is not known.
The Port Alberni SPCA office is closed Monday.
shovel, shovel, and shut up?
LOL! That’s hysterically funny!
He put the shovel handle up the pit bulls anus and pried open his jaws?
WTF?
bahahaha looks like something my dog would do
Wrecked him, hell! He (almost) killed him!
Chet, I don’t know where you find all these stories about pitbulls! This one, at least, seems to have a good ending.
Except for the pitbull, who, if he survived, has one hell of a headache!
well played.
One of those ‘shovel ready’ jobs the ONE promised...
LOL!
Atta boy ‘Digger’.....woof!
Even though the article is poorly written, it pretty much covers several of the options I’ve thought I would try to employ in a similar situation.
I suspect he tried to shove the handle up the Pit Bull’s anus, not the other end of the tool. But I could be wrong.
I’ve also thought of bringing my shotgun out and shooting the attacking dog in the hind quarters at close range to avoid hitting the other dog. As soon as that thought occurs to me, I picture the attacker twisting and turning, making any shot risky. And with the emotions of the moment, it’s too easy to not see bystanders in the path of the shot.
Grab the dog by the hind legs and walk backwards.
Do you have personal experience with that, or is it a guesstimate?
I suspect that if the dog has a hold on a victim, pulling him like that might risk tearing larger wounds. Though it might cause the dog to let go of the victim, you might be its next victim.
Making the dog dead is the best bet, IMO.
Wow, rolled up paper works on my Pittie....
Had the man that broke up the fight been reading the excellent posts by Chet 99 he would have known to wind up and take one giant swing at the pit bulls head first and without hesitation. He would have known not to just poke around.
I’m in no way an expert, but I have pulled apart four or five dog fights that way; the biggest dog was a boxer. I’ve never tried it on a pitbull.
All of the dogs were too surprised to turn around and snap at me, so I don’t know if it’s possible for them to reach you; as long as you can keep it moving sideays I think you’d be fine.
Warning: Nobody follow that advise with a pit bull. That is extremely dangerous. You must act as if you intend to kill the pit bull and make sure you have a weapon sufficient to do the job.
Don't stop until the pit bull stops moving but be ready to strike hard again if it shows any signs of movement.
