Shovel Stops Pit Bull Attack: Update
Published Date: 2010/4/26 12:34:34 Article ID : 7748 Version 1.00.02 By Keven Drews
UCLUELET A 27-year-old Ucluelet man says he was forced to knock out a pit bull with a shovel Saturday night in order to stop an attack on a family pet being walked by two children.
Jesse Stenbaugh told the Westcoaster.ca Monday he heard childrens screams of help, help, while walking home from a friends house near the trailer park on Cynamoka Road at about 8 p.m.
When he ran across the street and arrived on scene, Stenbaugh said he saw the pit bull shaking a golden Labrador retriever about eight months old by the neck.
I just saw this dog shaking this other dog, he said.
A man in a truck arrived on scene, as well.
Stenbaugh said he grabbed a shovel from the truck and tried to stop the attack by shoving the handle up the pit bulls anus and by prying open its jaws.
Neither attempt worked.
Stenbaugh said he then wound up and smashed the dog on its head several times, knocking it out.
The dog was trying to kill the little kids dog, so I hit it on the head with a shovel and knocked it out and stopped the fight right there.
Stenbaugh said he didnt see the pit bulls owners around, doesnt know the children, although he suspects they were about eight and 12 years old, and he doesnt know the man in the truck.
He said the Labrador was in rough shape.
Shortly after knocking out the animal, members of the Ucluelet RCMP arrived, said Stenbaugh.
Const. Ryan Warren, of the Ucluelet RCMP, called the incident a full on, vicious attack.
He said the smaller dog suffered puncture wounds, was taken to a veterinarian and is expected to survive.
He said the attack was so vicious it came in as a cougar attack.
Warren said the pit bull was taken to Port Alberni. The animals fate is not known.
The Port Alberni SPCA office is closed Monday.
Right; so if you don’t have a shotgun in your pocket, just flap your hands ineffectually and squeal like a girl. That’ll help.
Oh, well I guess that works just fine if you have long elegant legs.
Yeah...I saw that too and said the same thing. I’d have never thought to stick the handle up the dog’s butt but playing “Whack-a-mole” with the business end makes sense.
A Glock 40 and a CCW should be sufficient. No need for a shotgun, unless you want to pull it out afterward for good measure.
Bought a couple canisters of pepper spray so the wife and I would feel safe on our walks. A couple neighbors have pitbulls and seem to have difficulty controlling them.
Anyone have any knowledge as to whether or not pepper spray would be effective with this breed?
Look, I’m trying to get helpful information out there, based on my personal experience and the experiences of other pit bull owners. I don’t have a problem with shooting an attacking dog; you could use my advice to get the animal into a position where you could get a clean shot off.
As much as we all love to hear about how you’re going to hit the dog with napalm and then stick your 50 cal up it’s nose, I think my way is a little more practical.
You have some experience with it, and that always beats the person with a theory.
;-)
Now that is an old old joke......:O)
Somebody needs a walk!
While the article made it sound that way, I do believe he made two separate attempts, first up the anus and when that failed tried to pry the jaws apart. I am sure if he got the shovel up the dogs anus to his jaws the dog would have noticed!:)
Thanks. :-)
I forgot to put in my post, the dogs I have grabbed that way have always let go of the other right away; I don’t know what they would have done if they were holding on to something light enough to drag...
(Blue Hippos LOVE their spoons!)
(What do Pit Bulls, tornadoes and Vikings have in common?)
Do Blue Hippos love their spoons as much as Walruses love their bukkits?

Ooooh.
Works with full grown male Dobes, too.
Unlike LEL, I’m short and well within their reach so if the dogs had wanted to, they could’ve easily turned around and bit me but they did not.
Being hoisted off thrown balance like that seems to take the fight right out of them.
