California authorities said a meter reader acted in self-defense when he killed a toy poodle after striking it with a metallic rod.
But Shirley Newman insisted her 6-pound pet never posed a threat to the worker. “He could have taken his meter stick and shooed her,” Newman told CNN. “Had he caused a laceration I would have said self-defense. But he shattered her jaw and broke her face.”
The incident happened on April 16 in Rancho Santa Margarita, a community in Orange County.
According to Newman, her four-year-old dog, Calisto, snuck out of a gate that surrounded the family’s garage. “I went to open the gate and my six pound poodle got out and I saw the gas meter man walking toward our house, “ she said. “I waved and said ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’ll come get her.’”
Newman said her husband, who went to retrieve the pet, was told by the meter reader “something’s wrong with your dog.” She said the worker, who is employed by the Southern California Gas Company, told her husband the dog was “convulsing.”

A toy poodle can rip a mans throat out, I’ve seen it.
We had to handcuff the guy and then duct tape him up, and smear meat juices on his throat, and then leave him and the dog alone for 12 days, but it happened, I guess it could happen to any of us, it was just awful.

It takes a tough man to stand up and fight a full grown toy poodle. I’m glad he survived. He’s on disability now, right?

I think I’d have a much better chance defending myself from a six pound toy poodle without having to kill it, than a pit bull.
I’d say the guy over-reacted. The meter company could easily give the readers pepper spray or something that wouldn’t kill the dog and not permanently damage them.
Only sick people look for the smallest reasons to think they have a green light to kill somebody’s pet. Think lady cop stomping on family cat telling the people they’re lucky they didn’t have that happen to them. That’s the class of person this meter reader is in as far as I am concerned. Little people acting big.

Yes, psychological disability - he keeps seeing his life flash before his eyes, which interferes with his hunting/fishing/TV watching. What an ass.
Personally, I'd take the uhhh...risk...of disembowelment... before hurting the dog or possibly ruining a child's childhood.
