Cabbie held for pointing gun at cops

A taxi driver is accused of pulling a gun on a car full of undercover Scranton police officers in a fit of road rage Wednesday.

John Harrington, 31, of 543 Prescott Ave., was tracked down, arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, simple assault, terroristic threats and disorderly conduct, police said.

He allegedly pointed a .22-caliber handgun at the officers as he passed them on South Washington Avenue.

Mr. Harrington was driving fast and following closely behind the unmarked police car as it traveled down Broadway to return to police headquarters about 6:15 p.m., police said. After he tried to pass the car several times and the four plainsclothes officers inside told him to slow down, Mr. Harrington pulled the gun to show his displeasure, police said.

The incident was called in, and a marked police cruiser stopped Mr. Harrington on the 1900 block of South Webster Avenue. Mr. Harrington, a driver for McCarthy Flowered Cabs, did have a concealed weapons permit from the Lackawanna County Sheriff's Office, police said.

Ten years ago I was driving on a four lane highway. I passed a car that was driving slowly in the right lane and he suddenly sped up, swerved in front of me, and slammed on his brakes. I got angry and did the same to him. He was a cop in an unmarked police car.

I was released after he checked my driver's license. It taught me a lesson that I hope I can remember.

A few years ago in Northern Virginia my friend went by a citizen from D.C. that was driving slow in the left lane blocking traffic. He used his finger like a gun pointed straight up in the air. He went home and a short time later a policeman came to his house asking if he owned a gun. He did but said they were locked away and explained what happened. The policeman said numerous folks from D.C. had been calling in similar complaints on other people but they had to investigate every one.

Late at night, about 2 am. we were being followed down the rural interstate. Then a wimpy red light starts flashing. - portable kind with a magnet.

I kept driving for about 5 miles to an exit with a police station. I drove right up to the front door and then stopped.

The COP got out of the car obviously irritated but I think he figured out what I had done. I told him it was not safe to stop in the interstate in the middle of the night for a car I could not tell was a policeman.

That's it. Nothing happened. Actually did not even get a ticket.

I was at an intersection where I had right of way, but stopped and waited for the police car to go first. He put his upper body out of his window, waved his arm violently for me to go and shouted “Go”!

As I drove past him (my driver window to his driver window) I told him he may want to turn off his flashing emergency lights.

Pennsylvania does not have a “brandishing” or “disturbing the peace” law. It could be considered Terroristic Threats, Disorderly Conduct, or what the OP said, assault.
