NEW YORK
If George Washington were alive today, he might face a hefty overdue library fine.
New York City's oldest library says one of its ledgers shows that the president has racked up 220 years' worth of late fees on two books he borrowed, but never returned.
One of the books was the "Law of Nations," which deals with international relations. The other was a volume of debates from Britain's House of Commons.
Both books were due on Nov. 2, 1789.

200 hundred years from now Obama’s two books, “Coloring with Garfield, Can you stay in the lines?” and “Tyranny for Dummies” will be past due. Of course the currency at the time will be cans of government approved creamed corn.
Not creamed corn ... that’s the fuel ... for the donkey carts we’ll be riding in.
Gee, imagine our first President gaining knowledge from Vattel's Law of Nations which defines "natural born" citizen as having TWO citizen parents. It would be most interesting to know which other books our founding fathers read to form their ideas and laws for this nation.
“One of the books was the “Law of Nations,”
So do we know whether this was Vattel’s book or Christian Wolff’s? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerich_de_Vattel
Somehow I don’t picture Washington reading anything in Latin, so I’m assuming it was Vattel’s.
Too bad he didn’t issue an Executive Order making it required reading for all Supreme Court nominees, as we might have gotten a lot more clarity in SC opinions about the meaning of NBC. To me, the weight of the available evidence supports the theory that the Founders subscribed to Vattel’s notion that NBC required BOTH parents to be citizens at the infant’s birth, not simply birth within the confines of the U.S.
Perhaps his Royal Highness Hussein will grant Mr. Washington a pardon.
LOL
Aside: Wouldn't surprise me in the least to learn of a slimy lawyer taking the case and suing, on the library's behalf, for ownership of Mount Vernon.
How soon will Bloomy go after the late charges? With interest.
Jeeesh...at a penny a day overdue, Ol’ George would have to come up with over $80,000.
Maybe his dog ate the books!
Wouldnt surprise me, great Alinsky tactic.
LOL
They’ll just dig up George and break his legs until they get the cash.
He probably did turn them in and it was never recorded because the librarian was too excited about meeting G. Washington.
What kind of anti-government zealot would not return library books?? Clearly the same kind of guy who wants to blow up a federal building. When do these nutjobs ever stop their domestic terrorism?
Bill his estate, I’m sure they will pay promptly!
