Pit Bull Owners Defend Breed After Dog Fighting Bust

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - Tuesday’s dog fighting bust is just the latest incident surrounding the controversial breed.

These pit bulls were trained to fight and now face an uncertain future.

People who own the breed say that’s not their nature.

One group is determined to prove that image isn’t everything. A whiff and a sniff—just like any other dog.

Only these are the much maligned pit bull.

Their owners say they are just like any other dog.

“They’re full of life, full of fun,” said Lee Nolan, founder of The Guardians Pit Bull Owners Club. “They’re hilarious to watch.“ Lee Nolan started The Guardians Pit Bull Owners Club two years ago, in part to change the way people think about the breed.

The problem is dog fighting busts like the one in Duplin County and a few months ago in Greene County involved pit bulls—dogs that were trained to attack.

“It hurts a lot because these dogs are wonderful animals and I hate to see anything happen to them,“ said Samantha Tye, a pit bull owner and trainer. It’s not clear what will happen to the pit bulls recovered in the Duplin County dog fighting bust. These fans of the breed say they deserve a second chance. “They’re naturally born to be a protector,” Nolan said. “So, you’re brainwashing the dog to be a fighter, to fight for its life all the time. So, it’s always on that fight or flight, do or die, kill or be killed mode.“ Dog trainers like Samantha Tye say pit bulls trained to fight can change their behavior.

However, it takes time.

Up to a year and a half and there are no guarantees.

“I’ve had dogs that have been fighting dogs that are terrified of everything, just sit in a corner and cower because they’re just, they were destroyed,“ Tye said.

In the world of pit bulls, there are lovers and there are fighters.

While technically the same species, they can be a breed apart.

Jeez...you’d think a dog bred to bait bulls would know better.

Get a good look at that collar. I train different types of dogs and all of them are taught to Heel, to walk beside me on a loose leash and no leash at all. Each and every one of them do preform this task at home, out on the street, and in the ring around other dogs. I use my voice and my voice only to restrain fully grown attack trained german shepherds. I can command them to take a bite and I can call them off with only a voice command. I am in control, not them. I completely control working stock dogs with a whistle from a half mile away. I can even work two bordercollies at the same time at that distance. So pitt bull owners, show me some of this with your dogs. What I see is the pit bulls pulling their owners down the street and I have to wonder which is more stupid. The dog because it isn't smart enough to do what it needs to do or the owner who actually believes it is them who is in control.

Believe what you wish, it is delusional to think that dogs who have been trained to fight to death can ever be re trained, and be trusted.

Just think.
People read posts like that and judge all conservatives by them.

I watched every single episode of the Vicks series therefore it is not a matter of “believing what I wish”; it is a matter of believing what was true.

Did *you* watch the shows?

And Lord knows that never happens with other dogs.

How much money have you made testifying in court against pit bulls and their owners?

A pinch collar does less harm to a dog than any other type of “choke” training collar.

It works based on the inborn nature of a puppy to behave when its mother gently squeezes its neck.

*Most* dogs, when x-rayed, display cervical damage from “regular” training collars.
[the “corrective yanking” does the damage...even when done with flat “no choke” collars]

A pinch collar requires NO yanking.

Just the tiny bit of acupressure applied changes the dog’s behavior.

The person with that dog is displaying -responsible- behavior because NO dog is “bullet proof” and a dog off lead in public is a disaster waiting to happen.

Oddly enough, the only dog who ever “bit” me was Border Collie.

No pit, Dobe, GSD, Rott, Mastiff [or any other breed, extant] has ever even so much as raised a lip at me.

The only issue I have with that photo is that the owner does *not* have the collar properly placed or shortened to the correct length.

Thank you for your honesty.

They rerun them periodically.

Try and catch them.

What they did with those dogs was nothing short of miraculous.

[and they do similar “miracles” every day of every year with hundreds of “hopeless” dogs]

Some people shouldn’t have pits. Just like some people shouldn’t have kids.

My pit was always a little embarrassed by the behavior of other dogs. They are a breed apart.
