Lufthansa has canceled all flights until noon tomorrow.

Munich was operating today, but will be shut down tonight as well. I read Austrian, Swiss and Northern Italy airports were closing tomorrow.

Angela Merkel was forced to land at Lisbon on her way back from the US.

There are no international airports open in Germany now. Frankfurt airport has brought in thousands of cots for stranded passengers.

I happened to be in a travel agency in central Germany today and overhead a customer asking the agent to get him to Munich. Nothing doing.

Sorry for the bad news.

Hopefully they will lift the ban tomorrow.

Frantzie,no one is telling us anything, the internet to Lufthansa is impossible, rumors are flying, we get no news other than BBC and CNN. People are just sleeping all over airports from the stoppage of flights from yesterday. We are scheduled to go out on Lufthansa Flt 408 from Dusseldorf to Newark.
Can’t get any news about any thing regarding flight status, airport open or where the heck is the volcanic plume.

Yup. His best bet is to get to Munich or probably Rome or Madrid by train. See if he can get a flight to Miami or Orlando.

Yeah, I tried to fix it up a dozen ways, but it pretty much says. CANCELLED EVERYWHERE

I tried to be fast and not pretty, but it looks like a fail.

I would try to get to Madrid too...depending on air currents and the volcano’s future activity.(The great unknown)

The volcano could subside or it could plume for weeks.

The only airports in Europe that are open and relatively close to you are Munich, Stuttgart, Rome and Madrid.

Sounds like he will need to take a train and try to get out of Rome or Madrid in Spain.

If you are stuck,

make sure you try the Schweinehaxe - its a great dish

and “helles” beer or pils is a nice crisp brew.

All German airports now closed until noon tomorrow, when they will reevaluate and decide.

Swiss and Austrian airports will close tonight through tomorrow at the earliest.

Milan may close as well.

The train south may be the best bet. They are saying the trains are packed, though.

From Lufsthansa web site:

Volcanic eruption causes irregularities in flight operationsLast update: 16th April, 1700 UTC
Please read the latest updates on the flight status here on this page.

Like all other airlines, Lufthansa must comply with directives issued by ministries and air traffic control. Many European airports have closed. In Germany, the airports in Berlin, Bremen, Cologne, Dortmund, Dresden, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hanover, Hof, Leipzig, Munich, Muenster/Osnabrueck, Nuremberg and Stuttgart have shut down. All arrivals at and departures from these airports have been cancelled until further notice.

As it is still not possible to predict when the current airspace restrictions will be lifted, Lufthansa is also cancelling all flights from all German airports scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday 17 April until 1000 UTC. Passengers who have booked flights from the above-mentioned airports are requested not to travel to the airport and to keep up-to-date with the status of their flights via:

Arrival & Departure

Passengers travelling within Germany can switch to a journey by rail with Deutsche Bahn, if their flights have to be cancelled. For that purpose, they must exchange their electronic ticket (etix) for a travel voucher at a Lufthansa check-in machine at the airport. Alternatively passenger can buy a Deutschen Bahn AG rail ticket. In this case the flight ticket price can later be refunded*.

Passengers whose flights have been cancelled will be rebooked in the same compartment free of charge on other flights (which must be flown by 31 May). Alternatively, if they wish to cancel their ticket, they will receive a refund. Further information is available from the Lufthansa Service Center or out of Germany toll free under 0800 8 50 60 70. Due to the exceptional circumstances, customers may face longer than normal waiting times.

At present it is not possible to predict how the air traffic situation in Europe will progress. Lufthansa is keeping a close eye on developments and is in constant contact with the relevant ministries, aviation authorities, meteorological services and airports.

* non-flown tickets will be fully refunded. Partly flown tickets will be refunded pro-rata

“Dusseldorf” lyrics from “The Producers”:

Germany was having trouble, what a sad, sad story
Needed a new leader to restore its former glory
Where, Oh where was he? Where could that man be?
We looked around and then we found
The man for you and me.
And now it’s..

Springtime for Hitler and Germany
Deutschland is happy and gay
We’re marching to a faster pace
Look out, here comes the master race

Springtime for Hitler and Germany
Winter for Poland and France
Springtime for Hitler and Germany
Come on, Germans, go into your dance

I was born in Dusseldorf, and that is why they call me Rolf
Don’t be stupid, be a smarty, come and join the Nazi party

Springtime for Hitler and Germany
Goosestep’s the new step today
bombs falling from the skies again
Deutschland is on the rise again

Springtime for Hitler and Germany
Uboats are sailing once more

Springtime for Hitler and Germany
Means that soon we’ll be going
We’ve got to be going
You know we’ll be going to WAR!

Driving from Dusseldorf to Rome would be a bear. The tolls on teh Italian autostrada “ain’t” cheap either. The train is the best bet.

It looks like Rome, Madrid and Lisbon,Portugal is the only way out of Europe.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/apr/16/volcanic-ash-air-travel-europe

Few, if any flights, are expected over the weekend in England and Wales and the shutdown could carry into next week. Tonight Ryanair cancelled all flights in the area until at least 1pm Monday, citing weather trends that show little sign of blowing the plume away.
**********************
In Iceland, the volcano continued to erupt, but volcanologists said was it less explosive than at the beginning of the eruption on Wednesday, which blasted glassy abrasive ash, destructive to aeroplane jet engines, eight miles into the sky. The plume was now rising to a height of just three miles, and the volcanologists said this would deposit ash only in Iceland and in the surrounding waters. It was not high enough to travel thousands of miles across Britain and the rest of Europe.

Matthew Roberts, a glaciologist at the Iceland Meteorological Office, said they had not ruled out further big blasts but added: “There is currently no new material being added to the ash stream affecting aviation in Europe.”

“An aerial handout photo from the Icelandic Coast Guard shows a plume of steam rising 22,000 feet (6700 meters) from a crater under about 656 feet (200 metres) of ice at the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in southern Iceland April 14, 2010. REUTERS/Icelandic Coast Guard/Arni Saeberg/Handout”

This is a Mt. St Helens type of thing. Or worse, but without so many people. It’s causing chaos in Iceland, too. Flying is out because the ash can kill engines.
