I have a suspicion that this incident had something to do with the VAT tax in the UK.

Marks and Spencer was always one of my favorite shops when I lived in Britain. I really liked their shirts, suits etc, and their stores always looked great.
Too bad they decided to employ “dunking Nazis” to harras 86 year old women recently.

An assistant told her she could not eat it because of the consumer tax difference between cafe and shop-bought food. I see some misplaced anger here. Granny should be PO'ed at the tax, not the merchant. If the store had violated the tax law, they'd have a lot more trouble on their hands than one angry old biddy.
