Shocker: Pittsburgh Steelers Deal Santonio Holmes To New York Jets
12th Man Rising ^ | 04.12.10

Posted on 04/12/2010 3:33:29 AM PDT by Perdogg

From Super Bowl hero, to trade bait, what a stunning, shocking trade that has just gone down, and the bounty is simply appalling for someone of his caliber.

This is something more akin to an April Fools prank, and frankly I am kind of ticked off we didn’t swoop in for this price.

The Steelers have agreed to trade Holmes to the New York Jets for a fifth round draft pick, the 153rd pick in the draft, to be exact.

I mean, I don’t know what analysis to add except one of the most well run organizations in the league just allowed themselves to get fleeced willingly.

"Wonder why we sidned Randle El?"

And I guess this also means that our latest "Plex", Limas Sweed gets one last chance to prove himself. I originally thought they signed Randal El because they thought that Hines is getting older and more injury prone. However, it might be in anticipation of this.

First off, they have six Super Bowls, not four. You might want to get updated. I've been a Steeler fan all of my life and am old enough to have seen all six championships. Secondly, I'm a jerk because I tell the truth? Why don't you get Jim O'Brien's book on Art Rooney and read it before criticizing me. Get educated about a subject before you post.

I don’t care what book you read you come in here and insult Mr Rooney and expect me to see that you are right How dare you. Anybody can write anything in a book but it does not make it right.

Whether Art was a saint or not is irrelevant. His offspring certainly lack class and integrity, and are currently in charge.

I thought I had heard a rumor that Leon Washington would be going to the Steelers also. That would make it somewhat of a better trade assuming he heals up decently. Anyone else heard the same?

You mean Dan (Lifelong republican) Rooney coming out and schilling for Barry Obama so he could be ambassador to Ireland? Notice how Dan never said lifelong conservative. I knew he was a liberal before doing that but still highly respected him. After that, I lost all respect for Dan Rooney.

Mr. Rooney was certainly a many faceted man. He gave quite a lot to his community and was very beloved. But did you know he won the money to pay for the franchise by gambling at Saratoga Race Track?

While he was beloved in this town and a church going man, he was human, not a saint.

All I said was that Art Rooney was an inveterate gambler and had his hand in a lot of political patronage pies in the city of Pittsburgh. I said that by all accounts he was one of the most decent men there was.

These are not facts in dispute. If you don't like to hear the truth, I suggest you put your hand over your ears and yell at the top of your voice I'm not listening. Because you are acting like a child. The truth is the truth whether good or bad. This is a conservative website where we like to deal in truth, not the way we want it to be, but the way it actually is and was.

does anyone really think Al Davis would do this with Holmes?
Santonio has not yet reached the level of outcastedness that apparently intrigues Al Davis.

That and thanking Obama for their super bowl victory during the trophy ceremony. What was that all about?

"But did you know he won the money to pay for the franchise by gambling at Saratoga Race Track?"

While the story about him winning a lot of money at the racetracks is quite true. It is not true that he used those winnings to buy the Steelers. Thats an urban myth. That day that is talked about was in the late 30's after he was the owner of the Steelers.

Art Sr. was actually a good athelete himself. A boxer who could have been on the 1920 Olympics team but bypassed it. In the 20's he managed and played on a number of football teams around Pittsburgh. These were barnstorming teams much like I imgaine the role that George Clooney played in leatherheads if you have ever seen that movie. Pittsburgh never got an NFL team until 1933 because of the old blue laws in Pa. You were not allowed to play games on Sundays in Pa. I guess the Pirates never played games on Sunday back then either. Anyways, as soon as that law was lifted, Rooney (who was by then a wealthy man with his political patronage and hands in political kickbacks etc..) got a new team to put in Pittsburgh, the Pirates who later became the Steelers.

This is all in Jim O'Brien's book called "The Chief". If you have never read it, I suggest you do. It's a good read. It came out about 10 years ago so I'm not sure if it's still in print or not. Probably can get it at a library around Southwestern Pa.

They had a play called "The Chief" that ran for about five years in Pittsburgh. A one man play, where Art was played by Tom Adtkins. He recounts a lot of this stuff in the play. It was really good but I think this was the last year it was run.

As a lifelong Steeler fan, it made me sick to my stomach. I will say one thing, his son (Art Jr.) who has basically been running the show for about five years now is smart enough to keep his mouth shut about politics. I'm sure he's a lefty also, but at least I don't have to hear about it...

It was SIX Super Bowls, and Art Rooney bought the Steeler franchise with winnings from the horse races.

I knew Art Rooney, and he was a very good man, but he did love to gamble.

Learn to use spell checker.

Bloddy good, old man.

"You made it sound like he was a crook. Thats how I sounded to me."

I never said he was a crook. He never broke any laws that I read about. It's just that the Rooney have always been portrayed as pure as the driven snow and it's simply not true. Do you like how Dan Rooney came out schilling for Barry Obama? I'm a conservative before I'm a Steelers fan and that made my blood boil. I got sick of seeing people like Willie Parker and Deshea Townsend with their Barry Obama t-shirts on being interviewed after games. This is my country we're talking about which is a lot more important to me than my football team.

If you're such a fan of the Steelers, read up on them and their history. Not the puff pieces that are in the local paper. The Steelers probably got Bobby Layne out of more trouble than Big Ben has ever been in.

Roethlisberger was a lightweight compared to Bobby Layne.
