'Phony' label doesn't fit Phil Mickelson

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Okay, so I have two friends who do not like Phil Mickelson. Actually, I know quite a few people who do not like Phil Mickelson. But there are two in particular I'm thinking about today after Mickelson put on one of the greatest shows ever on a Masters Saturday. Back-to-back eagles! Almost a third eagle! A brilliant 67! A slot in the final pairing on Sunday!

Yes, I know two people who are not happy.

One of those people is a colleague who knows Mickelson a little bit (but only a little bit) and the other is a friend who doesn't know Mickelson at all. He just knows what he sees on television and reads in various places. The colleague and friend don't know each other and they're nothing like each other, but the funny thing is they dislike Mickelson for the same reason: both think he's a phony.

The "phony" charge — in sports, in politics, in life — has long interested me probably because, nine out of 10 times, it doesn't make much sense. This guy's a phony. That woman's a phony. I don't like that jerk, something phony about him. A reporter friend likes to tell the story about people he knows who, through the years, have insisted that Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden was a big, fat phony. "It's all an act with him," they would say. To which the reporter would reply: "Well, he's been doing it for 50 years so it's one hell of an act."

I like Phil. I even like the way he blows tournaments by going all in with the driver. And I certainly hope that he beats Tigers ass today.

"At (least?) (sic) Bowden doesn’t quote Jerimiah Wright like Tiger Woods does."

HUH? Link please?

"For every one Oprah, a billionaire, you've got five million blacks who are out of work. For every one Colin Powell, a millionaire, you've got 10 million blacks who cannot read. For every one Condoskeeza (sic) Rice, you've got one million in prison. For every one Tiger Woods, who needs to get beat, at the Masters, with his cap-blazing hips, playing on a course that discriminates against women. For every one Tiger Woods, we got 10,000 black kids who will never see a golf course." - Jeremiah Wright

As a lefty, watching Phil is natural for me- whereas right-handed players seem awkward by comparison.

A right-side, left-side-of-the-brain effect may be visible to the spectator. Right-handed players use the 'logic' side while lefties use the 'emotional' side. This may be how Phil gets his short game to work so well.

After choosing the right club, letting your muscles takeover the shot requires taking your 'brain' out of it and trusting your body (emotional style) to put the ball where you want it.

Not being a righty, might they putting more emphasis on swing mechanics, perhaps?

Not sure if I've made my point very well, but some (if not most) of my best shots were those I made with almost no thought at all and very little time between address and hitting the ball.

Phil plays with total abandon. ...like Lanny Wadkins used to play. Goes for every pin, regardless of its placement. And for almost every green, if he's in range. Yesterday was one of the few exceptions, laying up on the Par-5 15th to avoid the water in front of the green. ....and he came within inches of eagling it anyway on his subsequent approach shot, which would've been his 3rd consecutive eagle on the back 9. Fun to watch.

An old golf saying: “The right half of the brain controls the left half of the body. This means that only left handed people are in their right mind.”

Phil drove it about 330 yds to the right side of the fairway, just beneath the TV tower and was left with a challenging approach. Laying up was good course management, imo. He almost pitched it in for his third straight eagle, but settled for a birdie.

Very good course managment, which was my point — he isn’t known for being a thinking man out there. But sometimes he surprises me.

He'll go for the gusto today and win.

Who cares? As long as he, or someone else, beats Woods.

I hear ya, but I don't want it to be Westwood or Poulter. ...not exactly the most likeable chaps. Hopefully it's Freddie or Phil. ...or K.J.

Yep, and that will be good for him today.

Green jacket for Phil.

Thanks for the ping, sir!! Great day so far.

CAVS kicking the crap out of Orlando...
Great show of the ‘77 Masters.....

And in a minute the main event. Checked leaderboard a few minutes ago and low scoring isn’t out there, not like yesterday. Fasten yer seatbelts, this is gonna be good.

About Phil. Who knows if he hasn’t been faithful to Amy. I haven’t seen anything to prove, or not prove it. One thing we do know is he has always been extremely friendly to fans and of course the game that has made him millions. Unlike the #1 golfer in the world who was dropping expletives on the front 9 yesterday....

No one here can deny what Tiger is with a club in his hand, but I’ll take Phil if you want to account for the entire picture on and off the course. If Phil wins and the entire family celebrates with him on 18, there won’t be many dry eyes to be sure....

IF I could afford some new clubs, I’d be looking a Clevelands. Your nick reminded me. Just like the look of them and reviews haven’t been too bad either. Cleveland Rocks!

Why don’t you go “like new”. I’d be willing to bet you wouldn’t have any problem with performance, but would save you a boatload of cash....

There goes Tiger again. Tee shot way left, club drops to the ground......
Like Verne said yesterday. Some things never change.....
