Oddly enough, I was just thinking of a girl I used to know named Dixie. It used to be a common name for girls.

Ms. Carter was also a registered Republican who never hid her political views (or party affiliation) in Hollywood. And her most famous TV role was as the liberal Julia Sugarbaker on Designing Women. She played that role with verve and style (real-life progressives should take notes); it wasn’t until years later that I found out she was an active member of the GOP. Her ability to “pull off” her Designing Women one can be summed up in one word: acting.

Dixie Carter was an originial and an immensely talented actress. She is already missed.

May God bless Mr. Holbrook and the rest of her loved ones. May He embrace her and welcome her home, while granting peace to her family as only He can. Amen.

My daughter went to see her on Broadway. She came out and visited with the audience for a long time after the show. She was a class act through and through. Rest in peace.

This has been one of those terrible days with the death of the 4 miners, the Polish aircraft disaster and now this. UGh.

wasn’t she good friends with Rush, or am I thinking of someone else?

Not sure, but do know he's friends with Doris Day. Sure there must be others though.

Most of the media on the weekend are asleep at the switch..TMZ is reporting it as well as etonline

When I saw she was 70, I was shocked. I am the worst when it comes to looking at someone and figuring out how old they are. I always pictured her younger, I guess because I hadn’t seen her on TV in a few years, its like time stood still. It’s just so sad, what a wonderful actress and a classy lady. May she RIP

That’s strange that she was a republican. I thought her show was produced by Clinton’s buddies.

I thought her co-star Delta Burke and her husband (the one from Simon and Simon) were Conservatives as well.

Yeah Harry Thomason and Linda Bloodworth-Thomason. They are huge backers of the Clintons. I did not know that Dixie was a Republican til I read it on her bio

That was possibly the best post that I have ever read on FR in honor of someone who we have lost.

Yes, I remember the “R” part about her .. imagine, out of the closet in Hollywood!

The only thing that made me think it could be other than a massive coronary was the way her hub’s statement was made. It certainly elminates anything like cancer, and a large variety of long-term illnesses that the family usually has time to prepare for. This seemed sudden and totally unexpected.

I thought that strange also. Usually the family will mention the cause, but in this case it's almost like they don't want to say what happened.

My Mom is talking to my aunt..according to her, she saw Dixie Carter last year at my cousin’s oncologist(My cousin last year was diagnosed with the earliest of stages of Kidney Cancer, thank goodness it never spread and they removed it) why would someone be at the Oncologist’s office, either there with someone or there because they have cancer themselves

Sometimes the family doesn’t want to disclose cause of death, either way its a tragedy. A wonderful woman who will be greatly missed

I always found that show to be a turn off. They were always preaching liberal values.

NOOOOOOOOO!!!! She was one of the good ones! A very vocal opponent to liberals. I’ll never forget when BOR her on when he was at the DNC in 2000. She was awesome, just like Julia Sugarbaker but a Republican.
