NORWICH, Conn. (WTNH) - A man and woman accused in a 2004 Norwich murder case answer to a judge. The pair is accused of killing New Hampshire scientist and author Eugene Mallove.
Attorney Thomas Teixeira remembered two other men initially charged in the murder. That almost went to trial and ultimately the two gentlemen were exonerated, so mistakes are made, he stated.
There were no comments from those who came in support of 32-year old Chad Schaffer and 30-year old Candace Foster. Both are charged in the murder of Mallove, killed nearly six years ago at his childhood home in Norwich. The 56-year old was cleaning out the home when he was found beaten and stabbed behind a dumpster in the driveway.
Schaffers attorney calls his client's bond excessive. My client does have significant ties to the community. His children are here. He's lived here. He's worked here for quite a while, Teixeira said. Ten million dollars in this community is an outrageous amount of money it ensures that no one can bond out.
Foster, a mother of two, who has no criminal record, was ordered held on $2.5 million bond. Both suspects are believed to have been Mallove's tenants and were forced to leave.
Schaffer's attorney continued, He's very relaxed. He's very relaxed. He knows he did nothing wrong and he's confident that ultimately this will get itself straightened out.
Schaffer is charged with felony murder and robbery, while Foster is charged with accessory to murder, felony murder and robbery.
Was there a motive?
Ping to those from the first thread on this case.
Not much news, just the standard court appearance for the perps.
I’ve never done a ping list before, so I hope I did it right.
If you don’t want pings on this case, please, just let me know. Also, if you’d like me to ping you if I get any other info on this story let me.
They were his tenants and were being forced to leave.
Thank you for the update.
Mallove's widow, Joanne Mallove, said Friday that she believed Schaffer and Foster had rented the Salem Turnpike home and had been told by Eugene Mallove that they had to move out. She said her husband had been "a bit concerned" about the home's occupants. He was cleaning out the home on the day he was killed and had refused his wife's offer of help.
Police said Schaffer was a "person of interest" early on, but they had only recently obtained sufficient evidence to charge him. On Thursday, police charged Foster before obtaining a warrant for Schaffer's arrest.
Judge keeps bond amounts high for defendants in Mallove murder
I think I remember him, but that FR account has been banned/suspended.
Oh, Kitty, I believe his FR screenname wasn’t “vlad” but “Waldozer.” I could be wrong, but read Waldozer’s posts, and the timing, especially note there have been no posts from Waldozer since, and I think you’ll agree. He didn’t join up until the month before he was murdered so he was a member for a very short time.
If Waldozer is truly him, he sounded like he was a reasonable, patient, kind, man. Sometimes I wonder if it’s true, only the good die young.
That’s what I was told, but I could be wrong. Someone mentioned another name as well.
Hopefully, someone who had more contact here with the man can clarify this for us.
I hear that train a comin’ it’s rollin round the bend...
can you say “Railroad”?
remembering the first two victims of the NPD competence. had they been successful in railroading the first two, would they be so sure that these are the ‘real killers’?
So, whodunit? By now Norwich PD must have worked their way through their usual suspect list. Are they throwing these two in the hoosegow for any good reason?
The two arrested were tenets who were told they had move by Mr. Mallove.
Whether they did it or not is up the the jury.
Thanks for the ping. After all this time, it will be interesting to see what kind of new evidence they may have found.
