WD-40 was accidental? I thought the -40 part of it was that it was the 40th water displacement formula they tried. 40 attempts at something isn't an accidental discovery, but rather a systematic testing system.

Exactly: They were looking for a Water Dispersing, lubricating, rust inhibiting application to be sprayed on the Atlas missile engines that were exposed to the salt spray at Cape Canaveral back in the 50s.
#1 through # 39 were not good enough. #40 worked great.
