Exactly: They were looking for a Water Dispersing, lubricating, rust inhibiting application to be sprayed on the Atlas missile engines that were exposed to the salt spray at Cape Canaveral back in the 50s.

#1 through # 39 were not good enough. #40 worked great.

WD-40 is also great to use on stainless steel appliance doors (refrig’s, etc.).. First you clean with 409, or something like that, then you buff with WD-40. Looks great and no streaks.
