How to make a Penny Can Stove

I just thought this was neat. I made one in about 10 minutes using a different design.

I made mine about the size of a skoal can and it will burn for about 40 min. Boils 2 cups of water in about 5 min.

I dont think the RTV is necessary if you get a good interference fit.

I fudged up with the 40 min burn time.

I based that on a 20 min burn time and had expected a doubling of fuel would double the burn time.

The best I have gotten so far is 23 min.

Tacks are a bear to use LoL! I used a micro tiny drill bit in a pin vise.

I just experimented with cutting with tin snips instead of the crimps.

It dont work so swell. sharp edges cause tears.

Well, no, but smoked pork chops, cream-cheese bacon-wrapped jalapenos and smoked garlic bread were about 5 feet away from the experiment.

Plus some fettucine alfredo from the ‘inside’. :)

Frankly, we’re still eating Easter chocolate.

Oh and nobody needs to spend another red cent on ‘BBQ Starter Fluid’. 91% isopropyl lights it up a lot faster for way cheaper.

Somehow, I think there is a leather-punching tool that is perfect for this.

Think the tiny one might work?

Maybe the push pin would work okay if you used a sharpening stone to hone it down to a very sharp point. I think I’ll try that. There’s a Harbor Freight not too far from the house, so I’ll check there too and see what they have.

I think ya have to get the amount of jets right as well as the jet size to get optimum performance.

They all worked great! This is the one I brought home to analyze.

It’s.... actually a nickle can stove... what I had in my pocket. Maybe that’s where I lost the fuel efficiency?

They say the weight of the penny acts as a gas regulator.

I imagine the ratio varies with jet size and other variables.

Glad it worked for you and it was a fun learning experience.
