How to make a Penny Can Stove
Survival Digest ^ | 4/3/10

Posted on 04/03/2010 6:19:20 PM PDT by mylife

I just thought this was neat. I made one in about 10 minutes using a different design.

I made mine about the size of a skoal can and it will burn for about 40 min. Boils 2 cups of water in about 5 min.

I dont think the RTV is necessary if you get a good interference fit.

No I dont know of steripens. I will look it up.

Here's the link to the company... http://www.steripen.com/

I'm not a rep for these people, and I haven't used the product, but it looks like a good one for traveling as it's small and effective...and not that badly priced when you consider that you're avoiding being nasty sick.

Acetone burns really sooty and black. It prolly wont blow up in your face. I think it is pretty low in volatility.

I don’t recommend it though.

Really sooty and nasty stuff.

Plain rubbing alcohol works fine

Can't wait to build one. Built a solar oven with a box and saran wrap and foil years ago that cooks rice in about three hours.

Yeah my Brother used to sell them solar ovens when he was in college.

Just use alcohol based fuel in this thing please.

OK?

Also, flatten out the dimple on the bottom of the can to add stability as well as added capacity .

Gotcha. Rubbing alcohol it is.

And for the baffle (I live at a lake, with good breezes), I will round up a #10 can of something, cutting out a space to work the flame.

Something ‘else’ (lol) to do with poking holes in beer cans.

Big can, big enough to stick your head in. You'd cut along the label for access to the flame, using

dikes.

When my son’s and grandsons and various friends go bow and arrow deer hunting up north, they make bean bombs. You put a can of beans in the campfire and when it blows up, if anyone catches it before it hits the ground they get a reward....(plus a trip to the local burn center for their hands if they forget their gloves)

What is a Penny can?

I think it's called that because you place a penny (or any coin) over the fill hole when you're ready to use it.

“I remember a fire can that I made in Girl Scouts. Take a tuna can, coil cardboard inside very tightly, and pour wax in. Allow to harden.”

Exactly, thanks to the cats, I have plenty of cat food cans.
They work great, I always keep a few around.

My favorite self pressurizing camp stove:

Svea 123

Nothing like the jet engine roar of a 123 in the morning !

It sounds like ...... COFFEE !
