I can see them providing wireless access through an APPs store online and offering GOOD APPs, but to limit adding S/W to just that is enough for me to say NO. I don’t mind on the iPhone because it pretty much did what I wanted right out of the box, but an iPad (a touted replacement for a laptop) limited to this is just plain nuts...it’s their non-open system mentality.
“its their non-open system mentality.”
Why I will never buy an Apple.
Appears to be similar to my 10” Dell Netbook w/solid state drive I use when traveling for business. My Netbook is small & easier to travel with and much more ergonomic/functional than a small “smart phone”. The iPad appears to be an overpriced & limited Netbook.
You can wirelessly sync it with your laptop or desktop to transfer files between them.
What is it?
What does it do?
If it only makes “Tweeting” easier...
Enjoy
I had no idea M$ had an open system.
I'm sure, but I'm here to read about the iPad.

Don’t let Microsoft making the move to only letting you get apps for their mobile OS from their software store get in your way.
That’s already been covered. All current iMacs ship with a bluetooth keyboard that will link to the iPad, and you can also buy the keyboard separately. There’s an iPad keyboard with dock, and a USB dongle that would plug into any USB keyboard.
The cradle hooks up via USB, providing computer connectivity, external keyboard and so on.
It has as much expansion as current e-book readers (Kindle, Nook, Sony E-reader), and more built in memory. Plus it can browse the web in color, play movies, play games, and flip pages faster than molasses.
I'm quite sure it'll be (possibly wildly) successful. For a fairly balanced review, check out this article.
“My wife has a kindle and the two things that impress me are
1. The display. Yes, its just black and white, but she can read it outside by the pool in daylight. I cannot do that with any notebook and I wonder if the iPad display will do that.”
The Kindle type display is absolutely both a strength and a weakness. I very rarely read outdoors, so that’s no big deal for me. Slow page turns, no color pictures or diagrams, and no games, movies, or full web pages is way too much of a negative tradeoff IMO.
I’d be interested to hear how well the iPad does in sunlight though.
“2. Battery life.. its incredible..”
With a full charge the iPad will let you watch movies for twelve hours, according to the review I linked above. That’s more than enough presuming you’re in the habit of docking it at night.
Yes, a CRADLE, that’s the ticket....just one, only ONE damn USB port on the iPad proper could have worked.

As others have pointed out, there’s also wireless connectivity.
I open Macs and iPods all the time.
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
It has USB, video and audio, it just all goes through the dock connector.

All in all, I'll stick to my laptop and XM portable (Pioneer Inno) and if the need to carry all my music with me, i'll go for the newer 7th Generation iPod Classic... 160GB of storage with a color screen. The features on the iPad just don't do it for me... as someone stated, with no ports, it's an iTouch on steroids.
The battery life on the Kindle is extraordinary, as long as you turn off the wireless feature.
Ooooookaaaay.
