PACE, Fla., Authorities in Florida said an investigator used Google Earth to find a suspect in the illegal dumping of a 1-ton boat.

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office said the boat, dumped in an undeveloped Pace subdivision, was missing its vehicle identification number and registration when it was found Feb. 23, the Pensacola (Fla.) News Journal reported Tuesday.

Marc Ward, a sheriff's office spokesman, said Deputy Gregory Barnes logged onto Google Earth for the investigation.

"He used Google Earth to look around the surrounding area," Ward said. "He was looking for anyone who had that boat at the time the satellite image was taken."

The boat was identified as the property of Dwight Everett Foster, 57, who was charged with littering more than 500 pounds of waste, a felony.

"Dwight stated it was his decision to dump the boat," the arrest report states. "Dwight stated that it was ... stupid and he knew he shouldn't have done it."

I didn’t think Google Earth was updated that frequently.

Can somebody explain how Google Earth can show a sunken boat?

Does it constantly keep updating the satellite photos?

TIA.

I think they looked for a picture of the boat anywhere before it was sunk. Then they used that as a clue to track down the boats owner.

I think he probably looked at pics a year more old. He doesn’t have control over the aging of the pics but it was a good guess to use Google Earth as a tool.

Per the story, the boat was dumped in a subdivision. If the boat had been sunk, we wouldn’t be having this discussion unless it caused an oil slick.

But is the judge going to look at the Google Earth satellite color glossies with the circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one?

Had the perp properly camouflaged the boat upon disposal, the authorities would have never noticed it.
