HONOLULU, - The Hawaii House Cultural Affairs Committee has passed two resolutions urging the state Legislature to support cockfighting as a cultural activity.
The committee held a hearing Monday attended by about 60 supporters of cockfighting, which has been illegal in Hawaii since 1884, and passed resolutions that supported the practice, but did not amount to legalization, KITV, Honolulu, reported Tuesday.
"I am sick and tired of them calling us a bunch of hoodlums when we are doing what we enjoy doing," Lloyd Marshall of Waianae said at the hearing.
The Hawaiian Humane Society, the Humane Society of the United States and other groups objected to the classification of cockfighting as a cultural activity.
"It is not a cultural activity at all. What you have is a small group of people who are involved in cockfighting trying to undermine the integrity of the Animal Cruelty Law," said Pamela Burns, director of the Hawaiian Humane Society.
Cockfighting is illegal in all 50 states. In Hawaii, the practice is punishable by a fine of up to $2,000 and up to one year in jail.
As long as the people involved own the birds, I don’t see why it should be illegal.
That said, I wouldn’t do this with animals I’d raised.
I don’t find it cruel like I do dogs. Who cares if birds fight? Its what’s for dinner..
Humans should know better.
I think it’s disgusting!
I suppose what Michael Vick did was okay? After all, he owned the dogs.
I think Hawaii would consider legalizing it if it wasn’t so heavily associated with gambling.
Hawaii is very anti-gambling.
I just hate animal cruelty.
I think it is obvious that if it has ever occurred, God has allowed it. That also goes for any crime or cruelty ever committed.
That said, it does not mean He condoned it.
Do you similarly protest people who raise animals for the purpose of slicing pieces off of them to sell at the local grocery store?
Exactly. The winner gets to be the daddy of the next generation and the loser gets to be dinner. Besides, it’s not all that bloody or violent. Most fights last barely a minute and the loser usually runs away.
My cock fighting days are over.........
Bad!
They REALLY need to readdress the name here. Rooster fighting maybe?
The place I live in CHICKEN fighting is a daily happening with one major difference is that they DO NOT install Razor Spurs and the birds survive to fight another day. Amazing is that the Champ of the area is a semi wild Jungle Fowl thats half the size of the Siams he goes against. One B.A.C.
In my yard there are birds of different ages and watch them most everyday. Even the babies "practice" fight and really do not see a problem with it except for the Razorblades.
They might as well legalize it. It is as common as palm trees on the islands
You’re another Michael Vick fan?
