The AMD Opteron™ 6000 Series platform addresses the unmistakable needs of server customers today - workload-specific performance, power efficiency, and overall value - while delivering more cores and more memory for less money.3 Leading OEMs including HP, Dell, Acer Group, Cray, and SGI are introducing new systems based on this highly scalable and reliable platform.

It’s nuts how low prices are going.

Q8400 isn’t the cheapest quad around, I think the Q6600s are still available. It just seems like the current sweet spot in price/performance.

All the i series quads will likely start falling soon, as the Intel 6-cores hit the market, but for now, the jump to an i5 or i7 from a Q chip is still there.

Intel after paying $1.25 billion to AMD has to keep pace.AMD has always been stronger in floating point while Intel is king of software derived performance and marketing. Enterprise favors AMD for use in their server farms and modeling machines like for weather forecasting with hypertransport scaling to extremes. Gotta luv the competition.
