Vanity: Overheard at McDonald's: Job Loss Due To Health Care Vote
Vanity

Posted on 03/23/2010 2:05:12 PM PDT by ReagansShinyHair

My family went to McDonald's for lunch today, to consume our usual $1 McDoubles and shared fries and drinks.

The bottom line is that it sounds like businesses have anticipated this vote and are initiating the process of cutting jobs to keep costs down.

The managers were having a meeting and we ended up sitting down right next to them. I don't know their McJobTitles, but basically most of them were store managers and one of them was a traveling manager for the area.

My ears pricked up as I heard heated tones! The store managers were protesting that too many people would lose their jobs. The traveling manager said that this is just a "business decision" that is being made because the "targets" must be met no matter what for the stores to stay open. I'm assuming that the "targets" are some sort of net profit goal for each store.

Key points: -Staffing costs are going to increase a lot on a per-employee basis, so that means fewer employees.

-The company is not going to accept a lower profit target.

-Even though the extra costs might not happen until the future, the cuts are going into place ASAP because the profit targets must always be met.

-Other businesses have not been able to avoid bankruptcy, including fast food restaurants in the area, and McDonald's in my area is going to do what it takes to stay in business.

-Nobody is happy about firing workers, but it's going to happen anyway in order for the company to stay in business.

Did you tell the office staff the cutbacks were a consequence of Obamacare (if they were)?

JOb losses are no problem, the way these Communists act they will ban McDonalds as too costly for the government run DeathCare anyway.

Don’t the electric co. allow people out there to pay a monthly budget amount? We do that and my $200 a month gives me a cushion for the heavy months. My acct. is about $1000 ahead right now. We save enough in the spring and fall to pay for summer and winter. It is also nice to know exactly how much you will have to pay each month.

Burger King was good when I lived out West. Here in Indiana I’ve never found a decent Burger King. I guess it varies by area of the country. I am not a picky eater, but last time I tried to eat at Burger King I took a few bites and threw it away. I used to like it out West, but here it’s totally different.

In contrast, Wendy’s was gross out West, but here in Indiana Wendy’s is pretty good.

pay $750 in fines per year for each employee.

What happens to places that have really high employee churn, like McDonald's? A fine of $2000 per employee at a place that has to hire a new worker for that spot every couple of months is really going to add up. Or is the fine per job slot, and not per actual hired person that year? How would they even calculate that?

Oh, probably — but I was kind of looking forward to sleeping in the backyard in a tent on hot nights — usually it cools off outside well enough to do that — it’s the house that stays hot — not humid here and temps go down almost every single night except for a few days/nights when it doesn’t cool off. I was hoping to really save money on those bills since I despise our water/power department.

Maybe English will be the official language once again in our Local MickeyD’s.

I can imagine a law forcing employers to hire people.

Even People with Special Needs.

This particular McDonald's has a woman with Downs Syndrome who does stuff like wiping tables and refilling the napkins and ketchup. She's probably about 20 years old and she's really, really sweet. She's been working at that McDonald's for about three years. I was always glad she could find a job at that McDonald's, because the job she does is about what she is capable of doing. I'm sure she'll be one of the first to go. So sad.

I think if you have fewer than 50 employees, you will be exempt from most of these mandates

I work for an <50 employer and they have been very careful to stay <50 for a few years now. This is just one more thing that ensures they will continue to stay <50.

Franchises are notoriously different depending on location. Differences in management and employees. A sloppy cook can ruin a burger.

I don't know...honestly they will want to keep the employees that work the hardest, right? That's not usually the native English speakers, in my observations.

Okay, as long as you have a very high fence around that yard. Coyotes and Pumas prowl about in CA. at night. LOL.

You are right. (Most of the native English are 75 year old slow Grandmas or teenaged kids with a combined IQ of 1)

I am not anti-[legal] immigrant. They just keep screwing up the orders.

High fences, yes, but no coyotes/pumas nearby anyway — what we do have is squirrels, possums, rats and a few bugs.

RE: “I can imagine a law forcing employers to hire people.”

Everything is possible now and I just heard on radio about new national law, part of this health care fiasco, mandating that restaurants print calorie charts on all menus.

I don’t know about you, but if I go to some nice place with tablecloths, linen napkins, etc., I DON’T WANT TO SEE CALORIE counts on the menu!

This govt. wants to control every move we make, every dime we make, grab every single thing and choice away from us and leave us with our hands out, waiting for THEM to give us what they think we deserve/need. Can anyone say communist Russia, ca. 1964, just as one pathetic example?

Exactly.

These are the people who will be “trimmed”. Then they will probably have to go on some kind of public assistance, with the resulting loss of pride and independence.

Very counterproductive.

See Directive 10-289. Pretty close.
