Where did this alleged “right” come from? I don’t see it listed anywhere.

Thanks for the ping. As I suspected - a right to freely associate and express, but no right to a prom. Sounds correct.

I can’t seem to add this thread to the extended sidebar or to the Mississippi state topic. Could you please assist? Thanks in advance.

Hey, any government that can force you to buy insurance can force you to have a prom . . . and probably force you to go there as well!

No prom, but the judge ruled her rights were violated. It’s still going to trial.

This story has read like satire but had they actually staged the thing for the sole benefit of this iconoclast attention-seeker (it has nothing to do with sexual orientation) it would have been the worst-attended prom in history.

But what a theme: “Two lesbians in an empty gym.”

Cue the Ani DiFranco music.

"I thought maybe the policy had been in place for a different reason," McMillen testified at a hearing on the ACLU lawsuit.

They couldn't have meant for ME to follow the rules!

The ruling was pretty much the outcome I was expecting.

It’ll be interesting to see how the school proceeds from here with prom-like activities - i.e. whether they continue to have them or not.

"McMillen said she encountered "hostility" from students who blamed her for the prom's cancellation. "

Whoo! Back in my day's the girls took their prom VERY seriously. I imagine there is some of the tougher girls waiting to catch these two dykes alone in the bathroom...

Seems like a perfect solution to me.

School isn’t about dances and atheletics anyway

McMillen has been openly gay since she was in the eighth grade and that she intended to communicate a message by wearing a tuxedo and escorting a same-sex date.

Why is it always about them making a statement? Straight couples don't go out of their way to wave straight signs or file suits. No, straight students should send a message by not inviting her to the private prom.

Haynes said. "I think that if the student prevails in this case, it will send a message to school districts that they need to accommodate students now who are openly gay and lesbian and want to participate in student activities,"

Accommodate? Is this an admission that this life style is akin to a disability?

Ellen would have done more good dividing that $30,000 up between several bright students who needed college funds but then it's to be expected.

And how many senior boys will graduate virgins because of this?

Will no one please think of the children?

I’m sorry. But the idea that something is too immoral for senior prom is just laughable to me. My prom was 1992, and I knew couples who had booked hotel rooms for the night. I was a good kid; I only had a tiny flask in my tux.

I also want to know if it is okay for cubby band chicks to go to the prom together as they have done for generations.

"The court finds this expression and communication falls squarely within the purview of the First Amendment," Davidson said.

Quite possibly. But that does not mean the school system has to sponsor an event for her to "express" herself. If she is so adamant that a prom is the only place she can do it, then she should pay for and host it herself.

IOW the Judge put the blame on the school district.

By endorsing homosexual behavior the judge gave attorney fees to the ACLU.

The judge said the cancellation was pointless.

This is a judge creating a pyric victory.

The ACLU should not be allowed to collect attorney fees.

No lawyer fees no ACLU.
