Okay, so here we are with 9th grade Algebra again. Can anyone give us step by step instructions on this?

You take a guess. hmmmm . . . about a 50 and 15? let’s try that:
50 divided by 15 is 3 with a remainder of 5. Who needs algebra when you can get is right by guessing!

A + B = 65
B / A = 3, remainder of 5
(3 x A) + 5 = B
substituting this in the first equasion
A + (3 x A) + 5 = 65
4 x A = 60
A = 15, B = 65 - 15 = 50

My math teacher told us the most important thing to remember in Algebra is:

"X" always equals one...

unless it doesn't...

then it equals something else...

First equation: a + b = 65
Next equation: a = 3b + 5
If you substitute the second equation into the first for a, then 4b + 5 = 65 so b = 15 and a = 50.

x + y = 65

x = 3y + 5 so x -3y = 5

subtract one expression from the other (remember minus a negative = plus)

x + y = 65
- x - 3y = 5
__________________
(0x) +4y = 60

y = 15

x = 50

check 1:
x + y = 65
50 + 15 = 65

check 2:
x = 3y + 5
50 = (3 * 15) + 5

50 = 45 + 5

50 - 50

x + y = 65
x = 3y + 5
==> (3y +5) + y = 65 (substituting second into first)
4y + 5 = 65
4y = 60
y = 60 / 4 = 15

x = 3y + 5 = 50

A is bigger than B

In long hand ...
A+B = 65
A/B = 3 r5
A = B*3 +5
B*3 + 5 +B = 65
4B + 5 =65
4B = 60
B = 60/5
B = 15
A = 65 - 15 = 50

A=50
B=15
