If you really want to witness Army training, go to Ft. Benning ,GA , Home of the Infantry.
They don't do 5 mile runs either , they do 12 mile road marches with full Battle Rattle (About 200 lbs)of gear on.
Then go on to the range where they're given 50 rounds, to hit random pop up targets, 40 hits to center of mass is passing.
Forget Ft. Jackson they train OTG’s there (Other than Infantry )

As long as they train for what they will do.

I could be mistaken, but I don’t think any unit in the Army road marches with 200 lbs. of gear.

(Although I think it was closer to about 85 pounds of gear.)

Only 12 miles?
In 3/4 back in the early 80s we had 35 mile humps twice a year. Daily PT varied, but sometimes included 10 mile runs when we were at LeJeune.

Sounds like Canadian infantry training too, although 200lbs I would tend not to fully agree with, most people wouldn’t be able to carry that past 1 mile. A really loaded down heavy pack in a theatre of operations is more like 120lbs, still stupidly heavy hehe.
They soldiers need bayonets too, it is great training for in your face combat, not everything is done miles away.

That is the weight that the military has deemed maximum for soldiers in combat to carry and still do their job. This has been a rule for as long as I remember.
BTW, when I did basic we didn't run much either, but we did do long hikes with the full 75 lbs of gear that was required at the time(lots of hills on the route also).
