NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A set of gold teeth may cost the city of Nashville $95,000. In November, Anthony McCoy was arrested on suspicion of failure to pay child support. During booking, McCoy was ordered to remove the gold "grill" in his mouth.
When McCoy explained that the grill was permanently cemented to his teeth, a sheriff's department lieutenant reached into McCoy's mouth and broke it off, according to Metro Council resolution No. RS2010-1156. The damage to McCoy's teeth is estimated at $10,000.
The city will consider the resolution to settle McCoy's injury claim for $95,000 for the damage to his mouth and because the jail delayed medical attention. The man apparently asked to see a dentist and was given Tylenol until about 10 days after the incident.
Lieutenant Tanya Mayhew was demoted and given a five-day suspension.
Cops are muscle, not brains.
Probably had his hat to the side and pants on the ground...
It doesn’t feel like diversity when you get up in the morning to see the new stories for the day and of the last 50 news items, 10 are on bad cops, 7 are on self defense and 6 are on pit bull attacks.
“Its really helped the TV detective show, First 48 Hours.” YOU MUST BE THINKING OF MY BEAUTIFUFL CRIME FREE HOMETOWN OF MEMPHIS
Agreed, but the consequences of police screw-ups are higher than for many other fields because of the power the police are entrusted with.
Maybe. I like the big white detective that is always smoking and eating donuts.
I like the show. Very soothing in a way. It seems the perps are mostly unclear as to not halving to talk.
I don’t think we know. I don’t think there is any national data base of even cops employed, fired, anything.
You would think so, what with the expense and all.
Exactly. When someone specializes in one or several areas, they themselves learn a lot about the subject(s) and so can much better relay the info to others. However, focusing on something like "bad cops" can give the misleading impression that they are more common than they really are. And I'm well aware that there are quite a few bad egg cops out there.
I don't know that that's true. I think it's good to publicize their bad behavior. The publicity adds to the stigma and suffering the bad actors will go through as a result of their deeds, and the public is made aware of a situation worthy of their attention.
Police are agents of the government, and as such, they need to be watched and, er, policed. Publicizing the bad actors doesn't necessarily paint them all as bad.
Yes, and the penalties are stiffer due to being held to a higher standard. and rightly so.
What about the women that support drug habits on the ‘child support’ the government requires-? I personally know of several, and legal recourse has gotten nowhere thus far.
I didn't say it wasn't. I just think it should always be added that there are many more good cops than these relatively few not-so-great ones. I can't tell you the number of times I've notified the police about some urgent thing happening only for them to completely ignore it, or take forever to show up. On several occasions I've stopped a police car to inform them of a nearby accident or suspicious character hanging around and they then drive off and turn in the opposite direction!
Seems a little overly sensitive to me. And anyway, if the people were to err on one side or the other, I'd rather they err on the side of being overly suspicious of government agents, including cops, rather than insufficiently suspicious.
What do you want to bet he’s on welfare???
And I bet if you were the victim of a bad cop and suffered or died for it, you wouldn’t so blithely dismiss this with a “majority of law enforcement officers play by the rules”
Sucks to be the victim of a cop who doesn’t play by the rules. Should we then hide all the stories of those particular ones?
Yes, they would sweep it under the rug. These bad examples have just been lumped in with great cops and called “pillars of society”
No, I would have the sense to realize that there are good and bad in every field and not go on a personal jihad to post every article I could find putting police in a bad light.
You see, there is no evidence that he isn’t seeing there is good and bad in every field. There’s no evidence he’s on a personal jihad to post every article putting police in a bad light. He posts what he thinks is important. He happens to think that this is important.
I think your post shows that you have more of a personal slant on this. You attack the messenger, it can’t be that someone thinks it’s important to expose criminality and abuse of authority in our ranks of LEO. Not true!
I think it’s very important and really....his posts are such a miniscule percentage of what is posted...why don’t you just post articles lauding police in a positive way, that’s the finest and best way to counter these articles.
This is why I can't stay away from FR. Very good point.
