Who Do Women Dress For? (Women, style & self confidence issues)
The Fashion Time Magazine ^ | Mar 10th, 2010 | Lucy Godfrey

There is no doubt about it: we all like to think we dress for ourselves. Why do we like to think that? Because it says, ‘I exude confidence, I have high self esteem and I like to feel feminine.’ It shows independence and that you have your own mind, but just how many of us do actually dress for ourselves?

I would say I dress for myself about 95 percent of the time. I like to power dress, wearing what I want gives me confidence. I seek comfort in what I wear and receive more comfort out of jeans and heels than a tracksuit, simply because it makes me feel confident and good about myself. That’s all I look for in an outfit.

What affects the way we dress? Lots of aspects can influence our choices, our company for example. It’s not just pictures that speak a thousand words, our outfit can as well, and we can communicate through clothes. You can see someone across the street and form an opinion of them in less than ten seconds and you haven’t even spoken to them. We base our opinions on what people wear and how they wear it. For example, when meeting your parents are you dressing for yourself or for them? When going out with your girlfriends, are you dressing for them? Or, if you have a hot date you may dress a little more provocatively than usual, all these aspects influence our choices.

That is ONE UGLY dress, then so are the cropped off mumus, and maternity tops that pass for tops for us ladies. They sit on the shelf and ROT, I won’t spend what few dollars the gov’t has left me on the ugly cheap made chinese crap.

I dress to please myself, and my husband...the thought of another woman trying to kiss me would make me puke...now when hubby does he lights fires! We are 62 & 70.

And I held my nose and voted for McNasty. I don’t vote for demwits, I know how bad they are, FR gives you a good education you won’t find in any school room.

As I get older, I seem to worry about these things less and less.

I have an 18 year old daughter. I watch her clothes shopping and primping and remember the effort I used to put into such things.

My husband helped break me of that habit.

“Who cares what a woman’s wearing? It all ends up on the floor anyway.”

Classy guy, my man! lol!

I believe that young women dress completely for others, older women dress for themselves and sometimes their husbands!

As for older women putting forth less effort - for the most part that's true.

Part of it is that a healthy 40 year old doesn't feel the need to compete with 17 year olds. (There is no competition! lol!) The other part is that we've learned. We know what colors flatter us. We know what cut works best on out hips. We don't have to stress and seek and experiment because we've worked out all those bugs.

(I *love* turning 40!!)

To 1 - You’re right, though amongst the fairer sex femininity is the exception rather than the rule in our present time.

My point was mainly that older women have stopped giving a crap what other people think of their style or lack of it, their social position or lack of it. :~)

You beat me to it. I was about to reply to MrEdd’s post similarly, but first looked at the replies to it and saw yours.

See, that’s it. We can turn heads, even being older moms. Gives him bragging rights.

You stated my reason exactly. Comfort, suitable for my body structure (hide the tummy), Clean, modest, as well as suitable for my age. I dress so that I won’t hear my mother’s voice yelling: “You aren’t going out looking like that are you?” Even though I’m an old lady and Mom has been in the grave for many years.
