I am looking for some help. I have an older application that is not 64-bit. It will run on Win 7 32-bit and also in virtualization on Win 7 Pro & Win 7 Ultimate. The problem is Win 7 64-bit Home - the most popular version.
Someone suggested installing it with Windows XP on a USB thumb drive to distribute. Someone said that will not work.
I thought about a maybe sending it out with LINUX WINE which can emulate Windows XP.
Getting the people to upgrade to Win 7 Pro or Win 7 Ultimate with virtualization is not an ideal solution. Trying to get some to load XP on Win 7 64-bit and get free Windows VM. If their CPU is not optimized for virtualization it is a problem.
I wish I could put a Java Jar wrapper or something.
Please no "buy a Mac" or "get LINUX" suggestions. Thanks.
What’s missing from the home version of Windows 7 that is causing your problem.
Win XP virtual mode.
What about making the application a vmware appliance?
I have Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit on a new computer at home and have no problems running old apps, even old Win98 apps.
Is this a VB application or C++?
More C++ with some 16-bit code. Thanks.
I tried that but you have to have a copy of XP (or older Windows version) inside the VMWare appliance as far as I know.
Recompile using a 64 bit box, it’ll run fine.
I use Visual Studio 2008.
I take it that compatibility mode doesn’t help?
You could try compatibility mode...Win 7 64 premium has that but only ultimate and professional have the “virtual shell”. I know the you can run IE in both 64 and x86 compatibility mode(for websites running certain flash apps that haven’t been updated to run in 64 mode. I had a video driver I wanted to run in win 7 32 bit but when I tried to install it, it said it wanted xp and shut down. So I left clicked on the exe file and asked it to run in xp3 compatible mode, started the program and the video driver installed clean as a whistle.( I have premium on my lap-top). So you can try to left click on your desired driver and ask the compatibility mode to try to trouble shoot or you can choose the mode to try(try xp sp3) to see if it will install and run...even in 64 32 bit apps will often run very well. Other wise you need 64 ultimate which will let you virtualize an xp envirioment and supposedly they let you download xp free for the process.
