Just be careful. Some sites have “membership” which allows you to download movies from their site, but that does not necessarily mean that you can obtain a legal copy of a particular movie.

Try http://www.archive.org/details/moviesandfilms for older free Public Domain flicks. Dig around you’ll find some gems among the rubble.

Bingo. There are a surprising number of web sites that are merely a front end to the usenet boards, which are chock full of pirated content.
