Vanity - Best Movie Download Site

Posted on 03/06/2010 8:52:51 PM PST by jettester

I am looking for Freeper input on their experiences with websites that download full-length movies, mostly to purchase but able to rent if needed. I have various devices that I would like to play them on including an iPhone, PalmTX and of course, my computer. My preference would be to download them to an SD Card (or similar) and use them when my family and I are on the road, etc. Does anyone have any favorites or recommendations to point me to? It appears some sites have a membership and allow you download multiple movies while other sites charge per download. Thanks.

Just be careful. Some sites have “membership” which allows you to download movies from their site, but that does not necessarily mean that you can obtain a legal copy of a particular movie.

Try http://www.archive.org/details/moviesandfilms for older free Public Domain flicks. Dig around you’ll find some gems among the rubble.

I love netflix, actually got rid of my cable for over a year (just reconnected to watch the olympics). Between the streaming video and the renting I found I didn’t need cable, as I don’t watch sports.

I use a site called instantwatcher.com to organize -it’s actually better than netflix. I used the cash I saved from cable to buy a monster computer video monitor and I watch on that.

If you like history, check out “The Age of Ballyhoo” which is a great documentary with Gloria Swanson. I watched with my parents and they remembered so much from it. I liked it because instead of going through the twenties by events, they tried to recreate the flavor of what it was like to live in the twenties; for instance how most people lived in rural areas and on farms up to that time.

It’s one of those documentaries you hear so little about nowadays yet it really teaches you something. And it’s not too partisan, which most docs are nowadays.

Bingo. There are a surprising number of web sites that are merely a front end to the usenet boards, which are chock full of pirated content.

I really don’t watch much tv, my wife does. Finding a movie, or even a tv show or documentary, these days without a political undertone is getting harder and harder.

I canceled cable about two years ago, and recently subscribed to Dish for my wife. Still, I do enjoy Netflix and, occasionally, Hulu.
