Thomas Paine made a statement that bears on this subject. Yes, THAT Thomas Paine. He wrote, "When we meet a race from beyond the Earth, our common language will be mathematics."

Think of that. An 18th century man, writing with quill pens by candle light, understanding something that Dr. Carl Sagan popularized with the plaques on the two Voyager craft that will explain us to anyone who finds those craft who we are and where we are, using math.

I use that phrase constantly in construction in response to my superiors.
