I don’t believe it’s cost that makes mice a “favorite” to work with, but rather the speed at which they reproduce, and reach sexual maturity. It is possible for scientists to observe effects in future generations much quicker than it would be in other species.
Space would also be a consideration for the first level of scientific testing. It would be possible to have HUNDREDS and hundreds of mice in the same size room that may only fit 50 small dogs, or primates - for instance.
Perhaps there are other considerations, but the above are IMHO, that mice will most likely remain the test subject of choice for “first run” trials — sometimes it takes YEARS to even have something WORTH testing on primates.
I was thinking of the intermediate testing, between the mice the bigger primates. I just would want something with a closer to human biology.
