PLANTATION, Fla.- Officials in a Florida town are refusing to take action against a pack of wild hogs living in an affluent neighborhood, homeowners say.
Residents of Plantation Acres, which prides itself on being a "horse community," say the feral animals are ruining their expensive landscaping, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.
"They really make a mess," says Nick Perris of the local homeowner's association. "They can eat through a lot of vegetation."
One resident hired an animal removal service to relocate the hogs but so far their trapper has been unable to catch any of them.
"They've come to my house 11 times since mid-December," says Kevin Lerner. "I replaced the lawns in sections they tore up but they keep coming back."
The city of Plantation refuses to intervene in the matter and police say the hogs are just a nuisance like a rodent.
"But a rodent doesn't weight 150 pounds," Lerner says.
oh it’s polished.....I recognize the brains all over it...beautiful motorcycle !!!
.. presently, I don’t own a bike but have owned 24 so far.
.. not one Harley
....if you want to seriously wound yourself.
Someone should tell these folks about “guns”.
Yep. The city folks are outing themselves.
You forgot to include a brace of Catahoula’s for flushing & beying at the critters. These hogs can hide in thickets like you wouldn’t believe.
Yep, night vision and/or laser sights are the way to get feral hogs.
You can buy a chamber adapter for a .308 rifle that allows you to shoot .32 caliber pistol ammo (which is actually .30 caliber). No suppressor is needed when shooting this pistol ammo out of a long rifle barrel.
I was just thinking of a homeowner sniping at hogs from his or her back porch - no dogs required.
Feral hogs are becoming an issue in a bunch of places. They cause real, lasting damage to wildlife habitat and they are mean. Some states have an open season on them year round, in order to try and prevent them from making a permanent deal out of this, they are that bad. They should form a neighborhood organization, and hold a semi-permanent BBQ with these critters. If they handle it right, not the worst problem to have.
I have to disagree on the hogs. They are a nasty invasive species that is not native to the area. They should be shot on sight. They damage the local environment and ruin it for native species. They also breed far beyond the capacity of the land to sustain them.
...and saying that, I live in a neighborhood with deer, coyotes, foxes and other large wild animals that are not considered a problem. There is a huge difference between native species and invasive species.
“Feral hogs are becoming an issue in a bunch of places. They cause real, lasting damage to wildlife habitat and they are mean.”
Live capture. Transport to Dearborn Michigan.
“A .22 long rifle just under the ear will usually drop them like a rock.
Yep. The city folks are outing themselves.”
I have read stories about hunters being treed by wounded hogs. I would not provoke one unless I had a lot of gun. I would not count on hitting the “sweet spot”.
“I dont own a bike but have owned 24 so far.
.. not one Harley”
That’s the saddest story I’ve heard all day.
Friends of mine keep Catahoula’s. Really cool hounds. Fearless against a boars tusks.
Problem with these hogs is that they tend to layup during daylight hours in the thickest woods or swamps. Only thing you can do is poach them at night (like you suggested) or push them out. That usually equals dogs.
Incidentally, the dogs usually wear kevlar vests. At the end of the day it’s the pig that should be gutted.
not sure how you come to that decision as hogs in this part of FL have been here for hundreds of years and have been hunted for that time for food.
This has been reported back in the books by the spanish because they rbought them here and hundreds of years after
I live in the oldest town in America and the Spanish was back here in 1575 and just before that.
yankees who moved won here and move into their big no character elitist gated communities should be the ones who are rounded up and taken back or hunted,
they’re the ones who are ruining this state, knocking down acres of trees, building crap strip malls, killings animals so they can keep their grass neat and tidy
If you miss with all 5 rounds of 7.62 x 54R, you still have a bayonet.
“If you miss with all 5 rounds of 7.62 x 54R, you still have a bayonet. “
Better not miss - that little pig sticker would only make them mad. Seriously. My favorite story is about a fellow named Snooky that dropped his inadequate gun and scampered up a thorn tree. It was a hot day. While waiting a few hours for the pig to leave, he discovered the tree was infested with tree sap and ants! We have some huge hogs in East Texas, a lot bigger than 150 lbs. A trip to the local taxidermy shop was a real eye-opener. I have an 1886 .45-70 Winchester that would make good hog medicine.
Maybe you dumb rednecks shouldn’t sell the land for those gated communities and strip malls. Did you ever think of that?
Maybe if you dumb rednecks went to a town meet once in a while you could check to see the zoning laws stay the same.
