Exactly! Until the child is old enough to lift it’s own head even cats and small dogs can be a danger. I’d caution against allowing the family dog to be alone with a baby anytime but especailly before they can walk.

It is useless arguing with a closed mind.

I am the owner of 3 delightful shih zhu dogs (5yr, 4yr and 6 months). These dogs would not harm a fly. Most of the time. However even these sweet little pups I would NEVER allow to be near any person other than myself, my wife or a trained animal control individual (vet, trainer, etc.) let alone a new born. Now can anyone here say that shih zhu’s are killing people left and right? No? Well tell that to my wife, when my oldest decides to exert authority over the pup and attacks it. Totally lovable dog 99% of the time, but some times they can and will defend something they perceive as theirs be it a toy, a space, a bed, whatever.

I do agree with the assessment above that Pitt Bulls and the like of dog types attract the WORST kind of owner and as a result you get the WORST kind of dog. I will not to deny that they are bred for strength and aggression but that is not a dog make. Plenty of large “aggressive” dogs are nothing more than big pussy cats. But then give them a horrible owner and teacher and you have a monster on your hands.

I in no way like pitt bulls or rott weilers as dogs themselves and would not own one, but to say the entire breed is dangerous is as big a mistake as saying any other racist remark against an entire line of humans such as all Asians are good at math, etc, etc. Dogs come one at a time and treat them that way. Never trust an animal with anything fragile (including 5 day old babies) until you KNOW what it will do, but do not assume that they are all monsters ready to kill you in your sleep.

Your statement is as ignorant as the idiots who blame guns on crime.

Guns don't jump into cribs and kill babies on their own.

Whether involving a Siberian Husky or a so-called ‘pit bull’,
it is awful when these preventable accidents happen.

A free society requires responsible individuals.
The price paid for our freedom at times seems too high,
but we must not battle the ignorant or irresponsible individual
by taking away the responsible individual’s freedom.

Education, coupled with effective laws, vigorously and strictly enforced
is the only way a society can respond and still remain free.

I agree. Of course, even here on FR there are those who think no one should be breeding any sort of dog.

Hmmm...looks strikingly similar to the other death that happened last weekend, and that was a Husky. Both situations had something in common, though. Both parents of these newborns felt it was acceptable to leave a helpless infant alone with a dog, despite the fact that the CDC, the AVMA, Dogbitelaw, and the National Canine Research Council (along with common sense that every parent needs to have) say you should never leave a baby alone with a dog, ever.

Why is it that this thread gets so much more attention than the Husky thread? Could it perhaps be that people are biased? Or maybe you and your “ilk” deemed the Husky tragedy a mere unfortunate incident rather than proof of some bloodthirsty monster dog with jaws of steel attempting to overthrow your peaceful, quiet existence?

By the way, Huskies are nowhere near as popular as pit bulls in this country, yet they too cause a fairly large amount of injury and death. In Canada, sled-type dogs are the number one killers, because......they’re the most popular dog kept on chains/outside. Do you blame Canadian Huskies? Are they somehow different than Huskies in this country?

Again I will ask you for proof from a reputable source that your opinion is right, but I already know the only thing you have to provide is more anecdotal evidence. But go ahead and feel free to offer whatever you have that would make a thoughtful person doubt their beliefs. I am still waiting.
