OK Freepers, here's a fun one. Installed Mint 8 Helena on a brand new out of the box Presario AMD Athlon II X2 240 Dual core w/ 3 gigs of ram.
During installation it couldn't establish a wired connection. The only error dialogue I got was 'could not resolve archive.ubuntu.com
The modem etc all work fine on my Presario with Helena. After installation it would try to acquire a connection with no luck.
Please be patient with me as I am not linux or tech savvy at all. Many Thanks!!
And also post the IP address and default gateway of the computer that is working (and you are posting from).
The default gateways should be the same. The subnet mask, as well. Most likely, only the last octet (the last number) of the IP address should be different.
The kids need the computer for homework,so I am done for the night. I finally found some info on the forums. It seems others are having this problem.
Thanks for all the help!
I was once the same. Google searches gave me all I needed to resolve issues with networking and devices. You wouldn't believe all the Linux forums out there with tons of expertise a click away.
Keep it in mind if you don't get any hints here.
The post that recommended you google the linux forums seems a good bet. That is pretty specific technical stuff that I’m sure some FReepers know about but may not see your post.
The only thing I thought was the obvious: was the other site down? But I’m sure you checked that.
lol internet
“You might try Super OS instead.”
Man, I really do like my Super OS! Bulky but baaaad!
Just for giggles, I plugged in an old, circa 2000, webcam, and Super id’d it as a camera device, but couldn’t find a driver to work. Windows XP, 2000, and 7 only pick it up as an unrecognized USB device.
Yeah, I’m liken’ it!
Could you post the output of ‘lspci -v’?
HaHa. That was Ubu 9.04. I did one with the 0bama logo being “we we’ed” on, too.
I’ll have to try and find it. You are probably the most well organized I know. You always have great pics and you’re quick, too.
If desktop , you might install an inexpensive ethernet card like Trendnet.
You might download Puppy Linux and see if he can get thru ...that will be interactive...but guidance is decent.
I just went ahead and threw in a new ethernet card and bang. The only downside is Mom decided to go with xp istead of Mint.
Thanks to all!!!
Got it going- thanks so much.
If any of you ever need a non-tech question answered, I'm your guy.
Thanks again!!
Hah! I use the same image on my Linux Mint 8 desktop. Vey cool.
