Word For The Day, Monday, 2/22/10
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
boeotian; adj or noun
adjective 1.of or pertaining to Boeotia or its inhabitants. 2.dull; obtuse; without cultural refinement. noun 3.a native or inhabitant of Boeotia. 4.a dull, obtuse person; Philistine
Etymology: Boeotian 1590s, "ignorant, dull," from Boeotia, district around Thebes in ancient Greece (said to have been so called for its cattle pastures), whose inhabitants were characterized as proverbially dull and countrified by their neighbors, the Athenians. The Boeotians presumably held reciprocal opinions, but their great writers, Plutarch and Pindar, though patriots, are full of praise for Athenian deeds and institutions. "Though his aim was to vindicate Boeotia, [Pindar] has probably done her a disservice, in that he has helped to immortalise the scurrilous proverb which he wished to confute. ... If left to itself, the slander might have passed into oblivion long ago." [W. Rhys Roberts, "The Ancient Boeotians," 1895]
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

i suppose i will believe that you were thinking of that song. i do not know jay and silent bob, and only heard of too fat for southwest kevin smith bc of FR and fox news.
good one!
Because he is definitely not guilty!
I don’t supposed Michelle Obama wants to hear that people wouldn’t live in neighborhoods without grocery stores if the inhabitants of those neighborhoods didn’t rob and burgle them.
Here in the Burgh, the powers-that-be put wanted a full-service supermarket for the Hill District. You know, dry cleaner, florist, etc.
Save-a-Lot said that that would never work, but they offered to build one of their stores there (lots of store brands, low cost items, but functional.) The powers-that-be rejected that as inadequate. Instead, they tried to work out a deal with Kuhn’s then started heaping on environmental and “living wage” mandates and Kuhn’s said, “Screw it.”
So now they turn back to Save-a-Lot of course.
i had read that. makes perfect sense but michelle won’t address that aspect.
