3 pit-bull attacks cause death, mayhem

By KITTY CAPARELLA & STEPHANIE FARR Philadelphia Daily News caparek@phillynews.com 215-854-5880

THE BLOODY paw prints were still in the snow, and a bunch of white gauze lay nearby. The pinkish snow was packed down where two pit bulls had attacked a 10-year-old boy - severely injuring his right arm and puncturing his neck, left arm and back with their teeth shortly after 11 a.m. yesterday.

The child had been walking with two boys who had both dogs on leashes. The dogs - one brown and the other white with brown spots - began fighting each other, then turned on the 10-year-old, said Capt. Ben Naish, police spokesman.

It was the third vicious pit-bull attack in Philadelphia in three days.

On Friday, a victim's wrist was nearly severed. On Saturday, a woman was mauled to death. And last night, doctors were trying to save a little boy's arm. All three attacks involved dogs known to the victims.

The aforementioned mutts are spoiled, BTW. They get all of their shots, frequent checkups at home and tend to prefer people food (scraps from slaughter/butcher and more vegetables than most dogs to alternate with the dog food). ...keeps ‘em muscular in the sub-zero here.

When I see a cement block & a bike tube hanging from a tree I know there is a pit in that yard. It was a sure sign back then that somebody was making a pit mean. I never saw what they did with them but my co workers did. They used to try to get the puppies away asap. But try telling a drug dealer you want their pups....

Shelters are full of mixed pits & pits. I wouldn't want to be working in one now. I still do animal rescue but it is mainly horses & cats & dogs. I have taken in macaws & snakes. When the snake tried to bite me in the eye he had to go.

With the economy so bad so many horses are being sold for slaughter & end up on a dinner plate in France. My 2 rescued horses cost me plenty but I never will get rid of them. I don't care if I sell all the gold I have. After what my ex race horse went through he deserves a life of being spoiled by my 10 yr old. And my Palomino will be great at western pleasure for my daughter. She plans to be a vet tech & a farrier. We home school so we get to be at the barn whenever the farrier comes & she helps him. The child has no fear & a way with horses. Thank the Lord, I won't be worrying about boys next year & I hope for years to come. She is in love with horses.

I have a pit puppy-mill rite next door,,,

They produced nine litters a year (last summer) all bred

by the same stud back to bitches that he fathered,,,

They had three litters and 3 bitches IN THE HOUSE most of

last year,,,35-40 dawgs at once,,,

Most of the thug’s stock died from worms? I guess,,,

We could smell the dead,,,

The thug went to jail for dope for about 6 months so maybe

some just starved to death,,,

The stink is so bad in that house they had to have windows

open even when it got down to 14 degrees this winter,,,

I will only walk the yorkie out back now while armed because

we have been charged twice by pits that have gotten off

they’re tow-chains,,,

Kids downrange the first time and could not get a shot the

second because of darkness,,,

Ammonia seems to work well to keep them from charging the

fence,,,

I was at the store a few weeks back and came back to the

car to find a truck with a pit in it throwing itself against

the window trying to attack me,,,

Last fall I saw a young kid being chased into his house by

a pit,,,

AC got that one the next day as I was told,,,

HarleyMama has a new shotgun just like the pic I posted

(without the sight),,,

Ain’t nothing else gunna come across that fence...

What I saw the most were stupid people that interbred pits to make them mean to defend their drug houses.

Yes, just watch an hour of "Animal Cops" on "Animal Plant" to find out who is causing the problem with pit bull type dogs. It's the same people who cause most of the worlds problems.

I have no problem with anyone defending themselves. When you say puppy mill I think of puppy mills like in PA & Ohio. Large scale operations. But I suppose if you have a person doing back to back breeding it is much the same. Where is your animal control officer? No help? I know I deal with them with starving horses. The things I see are heartbreaking. I have tried everyone to help with starving horses. Even the NJ Dept of AG. Nobody wants to help horses except rescue groups.

From my work I was taught to curl up in a ball & cover my face & stay as still as you can. Dogs want the chase. So stay still. Sometimes they will get bored & go away. I wouldn't count on it though. And pray somebody comes with a gun. Here in NJ you can't really carry guns to protect yourself & mace doesn't work. So my little dogs stay in my stockade double fenced yard. We have a pit that gets loose & all the parents are upset. The owner is a dizzy woman who swears her Lily wouldn't hurt a fly. We keep a baseball bat by the front steps to beat it with if it wanders around Sassy, my daughter. The animal control comes out but by then the pit is back home. It is a time bomb ticking. I know one of the many kids here are going to get bitten and there is nothing we can do legally. We have to wait until a cop or a animal control officer sees her loose. Go figure!

Spent gobs on 00 buck at a little over 50 cents a load. They’re about 60 each if bought in small boxes instead of cases. ...reloaded Colt ammo—way cheaper if figured for a couple of years, even with the supplies, chronograph and handloading equipment figured in. Have to use 5W synthetic oil very lightly for bores and parts this time of year. Everything else freezes up.

I do volunteer work w/ a shelter & it’s heartbreaking. Basically, substitute a kid for a pitbull & the child will also turn out bad if raised by the wrong people.

Why are people in public housing allowed to have dogs????? They can’t afford them. Correct????? It baffles.

In the end the dogs are the victims of criminal thugs. The dogs did not ask to belong to ignorant, horrible people who shouldn’t even be allowed to own silverware!

Our shelter has strict adoption rules. It’s almost comical to watch some clueless thug come up & say, “Got any puppies?” Yes, we do- just not for you.

When my husband was in Miami 5 years ago they had a law in Dade county that absolutely banned pits & pit mixes. If animal control officers were given complete leeway to take every dog who was not spayed/neutered &/or didn’t have their shots & then there was a huge fee to pick up said dog-— I bet the problem would go down.

HIT THESE THUGS IN THE POCKET............. START MAKING LIFE COMPLETELY HORRIBLE & UNCOMFORTABLE FOR THESE SUBHUMANS.

I love animals & the whole situation of mangled people & tortured animals is beyond the beyond.

"We keep a baseball bat by the front steps to beat it with if it wanders around Sassy, my daughter."

Do you have carpenters' pants with a hammer loop? A claw hammer might handier at times, when you need both hands free. Granted, a cordless framing nailer might work pretty good, though. ;-)

I truly feel sorry for ya’ll,,,

No way I could live there,,,

I was taught to shoot to kill anything that was/is a

threat to my life or others,,,

Louisiana is an open carry state,,,hip/car/hand,,,

Local AC finally came out and too 3 pits out of the yard

because the thugs were over the limit of 4 ,,,

I would go with a small ax to fend off anything,,,

A long sharp blade would would be my second choice,,,

You are correct about that “time-bomb”,,,

Hug Sassy for me,,,

Glad she is a “CowGal” type...;0)

We’ve been round-n-round with HUD/cops/AC/city hall and all

they have done is take 3 of the pits out of their backyard

because of the limit of 4 ,,,

We’ll get through this one way or the other...;0)

Didn’t mean to insult your neighborhood. You just painted such an awful picture in my mind. Hopefully you can get some help from the proper authorities.

I live with a very mean biker. He won’t mess around when it comes to Lily the pit if she comes at Sassy. He doesn’t care about what NJ has to say about things for the most part. If need be I have a flare gun. That is still legal here so far.....I can’t wait to get out of this crazy state!

I can't keep her away from the horses thankfully. There are new pics up of her on one of the horses on my page. Better horses then boys! If she sees Lily the pit she comes inside the house. I feel bad because I don't want to scare Sassy but I tell her & all the kids stay away from dogs you don‘t know. Never run from them since that makes you fair game to the dogs. We always have parents outside & when we see Lily one of us just uses our cell to call the police. And we get the kids inside or behind a fence. Lily's time is coming. I just wish her silly owner would fence her in, it is the owner's fault Lily is loose. She might be nice but I am not catching her to find out!
