I can’t count the number of times I have stopped on a country road to pick up someone elses muffler out of the middle of the road, or someone’s trash cans blowing into the road. I guess most think it is “someone else’s job”...

A similar situation here. When I run at a track at a local high school, the first thing I do is pick up the junk that people carelessly toss: water bottles, candy wrappers and other debris. One afternoon, another runner actually asked if I was a ``liberal do-gooder''.
He didn't say it with a sneer -- more an off-the-cuff light comment. I explained to him that I may be doing good but am far from a liberal. I went on to add that as a conservative, we need to be good stewards and do our part to keep things nice looking. I wrapped up by saying that I simply don't like to look at crap when I run, so my motive stem from enlightened self-interest.
And the rest of the story is that he grabbed a few of the discarded bottles and helped me clean up before I started my laps.
