The West Hollywood City Council has put an end to sales of dogs and cats in pet stores.
In an ordinance that passed unanimously Tuesday night, sales of animals in stores are now prohibited in the city.
The ordinance, unanimously approved at its first reading a few weeks ago, is just the latest piece of animal-welfare legislation the city has taken up. In 2003, West Hollywood became the first city in the country to outlaw the declawing of cats.
The new law, called the Ordinance Prohibiting the Sale of Dogs and Cats in Companion Animal Stores, is aimed at curtailing puppy mills and easing the conditions endured by animals in the puppy-mill industry, which relies heavily on sales through pet stores, officials said in a statement.

I always admire BCs, but I could never live with the level of activity. They do need a job, and I will never own anything for them to herd!
I've been really debating a dog choice these past few months. Brytlea - you are a golden retriever person - I'm a boxer person. Last 2 boxers - one was from the humane society (great dog Jake!! - he was a boxer mix) and the last one was a retired full blood breeder they were going to put to sleep (got her for free). I have so enjoyed my boxers I'm trying to decide which way to go. Rescue society's charge $250 for even boxer mixes (nada), rarely do they show up at humane societys so I'm actually thinking of buying a purebred puppy.
I hate puppies but I also love them, they are so adorable and they pee on everything and chew/destroy everything they can get their teeth on so I want to go with an adult but they are hard to find.
A_perfect_lady - I see on your home page you teach English as a second language? Are you in the public school system and I was just wondering if that be at the taxpayer expense?
You can try to paint me as a liberal because I don’t like to see more animals brought into the world when so many are without homes, but it’s a cheap trick and doesn’t impress me at all. You’re all over here defending yourself. Go ahead. You’re still contributing to the misery of the animals we’ve trained to trust us. Have golden day yourself, hon.
Hey. Creep. I haven't checked your home page. Know why? Don't care about you or your opinion. Shock, eh?
The funny part of this is that I don’t think there’s a single pet store selling dogs and cats in West Hollywood.
They probably sell plenty of gerbils.
Wow - you are certainly rude! You are no “perfect lady”. I would expect more out of a teacher than to call people names. With teachers like you, I can see why so many people are turning to homeschooling!
I have had goldens from a field trial champion line for quite some time now...I know their pedigree, and their temperment; because I know this particular bloodline, I also know that as far as goldens go, this one is particularly long-lived for goldens (two of them, one the aunt to the other, lived 14 and 16 years respectively, my youngest is nearly 12 and is still more active than some dogs in their prime), and in a year or so when it’s time to get another puppy, I’m going to try to get another dog with similar ancestry.
That’s one thing buying from good breeders can get you - knowledge of your dog’s ancestry. Plus I love the hunting instincts of these dogs...and I do take them out hunting.
I’m rude to stalkers.
Stalkers? I have never stalked you - I looked at your home page. I never even knew you existed (thank goodness) till last night.
Those pictures are just too cute!
Well, how about you return to your oblivion?
Another reason to homeschool!
My golden says she would like to go with you, but she is mostly a lizard hunter. :)
I think you should always try rescue first, especially if you don’t want a puppy. I don’t know much about boxer rescue, and to be honest, some of the rescues are better than others. My neighbor has a boxer and he’s a good boy. They got him thru a rescue here after their last one died of old age.
On the other hand, sometimes breeders have dogs to place. I have placed adults on occasion thru the years.
Thanks for the response. I was actually thinking about taking a puppy - but it’s such an investment of time - like having a child or in my case - taking in a grandchild to raise. :)
My last baby was a senior when I got her, I spent a fortune on vet bills and had her less than a year when she died from a tumor in her spine or brain. She was worth every penny, a dear sweet soul she was.
Just today, after hearing a friend describe his sleepless night with his brand new 8 wk Lab - I need to think about this for awhile.
Appreciate the advice! Perhaps it’s best to pay a rescue price for someone 2-4 years old.
Yes, it’s very hard to take on an older one and lose them so quickly. But, I always like my old dogs the best, they get very cool as they age. But, I think a 2 year old is a great deal, as they are generally past the bad stuff (if they are ever GOING to get past it!) but they still have a lot of years left to go. On the other hand, I so admire people who can take on an oldster (and feel the exact opposite about someone who can dump at old dog).
