One of the media elite's most whispered-about scandals went public Wednesday when married CNN correspondent Jeffrey Toobin squared off with a woman who says he's the father of her baby.

Yale-educated lawyer Casey Greenfield - the daughter of eminent CBS News analyst Jeff Greenfield - had a chilly faceoff with Toobin in Manhattan Family Court.

The ex-lovers barely spoke in the waiting area before joining their lawyers behind closed doors with a court referee to hash out custody and money issues.

Toobin, who glumly sat several rows away from Casey Greenfield before the hearing, is said to have privately admitted to fathering the child, believed to have been born last summer, sources said.

Just after the Clinton impeachment, Jeffrey Toobin signed up to FR and posted a thread (screenname= "a writer") identifying himself and telling us he was an unbiased writer looking to write a book on the impeachment. He claimed he was looking to present the "right wing internet environment" view of Clinton and the impeachment.

Some people responded seriously and wrote about their views on everything from Vince Foster, to Linda Tripp, to the Mena drug cartels, and Ron Brown, etc.

Most people called him a liberal hump who was trolling for views he could cite as his examples of the nut job rightwing loons who wanted to hurt poor sweet innocent Bill Clinton. I was in this group, and it was a fun day pointing out what a liberal hump he was.

When the book finally came out, there was no mention of the hazing he took that day, but some people's serious responses were indeed featured as examples of the loony right wing nutjobs on the internet.

FTA: Greenfield, 36, was married to screenwriter Matt Manfredi in 2004 by federal Judge Kimba Wood, who became known as the "Love Judge" after an an affair of her own in 1995.

That is quite interesting, and it's something I'd never heard before. Yet another reason to loathe Toobin. Personally, it's his righteous leftist sanctimony he embraces when talking about the Robert's court that really rubs me wrong. He was so entirely over the top when talking about the Citizens United decision, it was "Barney Frank-esque". The guy is a - well, I can't say what I think he is in polite company.

I know and like Jeff Toobin. He is not only brilliant, but kind and helpful to everybody he meets. I don't care what his politics are; that is not relevant to the situation at issue. I hope for the sake of Jeff and his family that none of this is true.

Not connected but worth a mention. I saw Jeffrey Toobin on CNN with Anderson Cooper. This no more than 15 minutes ago. He mentioned that he had called "birthers" racists and bigots. He went on that a picture of Lt Col. Lakin was in the background. As most people know, the soldier has to face a court martial regarding his challenge to the elegibility of the President.

Mr Toobin hastily disavowed any inference that he meant to associate the soldier with "birthers". I had to chuckle though, the subject that the press will not touch, by chance, came up. Please, just show the birth certificate. Never mind the insults.
