“Ya think the doctor was being honest and accurate?”

Hell no. Diets did not work for this woman and she was seeking a surgical solution. He said “diet” she said “lifestyle change.” She is right. All who get this surgery are addressed in terms of changing their lifestyles - not going on “a diet.”

Gastric bypass surgery is nothing but a surgically-imposed diet, in this case a reduction in caloric intake. This was a topic of study in the human nutrition/nutritional biology doctoral program at the University of Chicago. The so-called lifestyle change as the result of the surgery is that because the stomach volume has been reduced to something like the first two fingers eating too much (or too many carbohydrates) results in dumping. This is usually such a horrible experience that a single episode is all it takes to keep a patient on the road to the straight and narrow. And the weird thing is that there are people undergoing this procedure who still cheat, like a woman who crushed potato chips and grazed on the crumbs continuously.

Besides, the talk of the "lifestyle change" is an example of the self-deception that is at the heart of eating disorders. It is basically saying, "I don't want to have the responsibility and have to make the effort to change my lifestyle of consuming excess calories and adopt a lifestyle that will result in my losing weight. I want surgery to impose a condition on me that will have an effect no matter what I may want to eat."

Here in America before you can get the surgery you have to lose weight to show you are committed and you still must go on a diet after the surgery.
My neighbour was turned down for the surgery she put on 10 lbs while on diet..
The surgery is not magic, whether you have bands or they remove part of your stomach you must still watch caloric intake.
