This puppy was young enough that it would not have known the difference. It cannot be compared to adult dogs displaying aggression, as puppies are known for their destructive chewing habits. This incident had nothing to do with the breed of dog, and everything to do with the druggie parents who apparently didn’t even hear the baby screaming. Chewing toes off takes some time. That baby suffered for a while before the parents “came down” and noticed. The puppy was doing what all puppies do, and was killed because people are ignorant. An eight week old pup is not vicious, it’s as mature (not as smart) as a three-year old child.

So many preventable tragedies, if only people were more willing to be responsible and socialize/train their pets. I know a man who has a “dimple” on his cheek from when he was little. His parents were visiting friends and they let him out alone with the dog while it was eating! Sad thing is, for years he thought it was a pit bull that attacked him, until he pulled out a dog breed book to show me and found out he was way off. He assumed it was a pit bull because it attacked him!
Dogs and little kids need constant supervision, and they should never be alone together. Poor kid.

It is nice to see some sanity on this subject for once.
I don't agree a federal law would be effective. I wish to God it was and we could promote responsible ownership.
The genetics of the breed have nothing to do with irresponsible ownership.
Classifying a breed as a destructive device would only criminalize the breed, opining the door for more un-inforcible legislation. Not allowing felons to own a gun has not worked.
If it were the case, a destructive device just got done licking my one year old all over the face!

I don't agree with the “destroy gene” theory. All dogs that have been breed irresponsibly will have dogs that are undesirable and should be culled.
Point in case is the Brittany spaniel that bit me a couple of years ago. The dog was obviously neurotic and the owner admitted that.
If a dog has a genetic problem it is easy to identify by observing its behavior.

What about the cat that chewed a babys toes off in SE Ohio last year?
It was the meth-heads fault. Why is this different?

Spot on! I really get sick and tired of these people who suggest that it’s always the owner’s fault. As if that’s any consolation to someone who just had their child’s face eaten off. These dogs are hard wired to be violent. Perhaps not all. But there’s no doubt they’re much more involved in the fatalities of humans than Labs. I also note a low life element in Pit Bull ownership. This is very true in Texas. We had a case here in San Antonio where two pet Pit Bulls ate an eight month old child. But, no matter, the dogs weren’t responsible!

"They are not different than any other breed"
and that's where I realized you were a typical pit bull apologist and I quit reading your post. "not different than any other breed", give me a break.

If that is the case, I'd say you're no better of a parent than the jack asses in the article and are probably exactly the kind of person I'm talking about when I say "wrong sort of people". Why not leave a loaded gun laying around while you're at it?

They are no different than any other large working breed besides the fact the media has criminalize them.
Case in point: I have seen three dog bites up close and personal. Just like the google pic's posted on another thread. Faces torn to shreds. Only the dogs that did the damage were two Shepards and the English Setter that bit my sister.
I don't remember news reporters beating down anyones door to get a “story”.
One of the Shepards was trained by a US army dog trainer.

how often do you hear about a house cat mauling or killing someone? Now how often do you hear about a pit bull mauling or killing someone? For that matter, how often do you hear about a golden retriever or a border collie mauling or killing someone Mr. “not any different than any other breed”. Typical pit bull apologias.

the fact the media has criminalize them
right, they just made up all those stories about pit bulls attacking, maiming, and killing people.

You don't need to call me a jack ass. That is something a liberal would do. How about educating yourself rather than eating up the main stream cool aid.
My wife is a stock broker and I am a stay at home dad. Does that equate to being scum?
I researched the breed before I ever owned one. I also have the time to properly train them.
You, on the other hand seem uneducated on this topic.
You should probably limit your comments to something you have knowledge about.

I didn’t call you a jack ass. I called the people who let a pit bull eat a baby’s toes jack asses. I said you’re no better than them and I don’t give a flying fart what you and your wife do, I stand by my comment.

I doubt they made them up. They do misidentify the breed on a regular basis.
They also fail to report on stories that don't involve a “pit bull”.
You would think, being a member of this site, you wouldn’t have so much respect for the mainstream media.

People who rant like you only help educate people about the bad rap that all bully breed dogs get. Later!
I have to get back to work and so should you!
