Agreed! However, wasn’t he in a group?

No list is legitimate without Roy Orbison.
You won't hear me complain. Even if he wasn't quite among my original choices, the man was nonpareil.
For that matter, so was Les Paul on his own. Not to mention Wes Montgomery, Big Joe Turner, and Sonny Boy Williamson.

30 years in radio (Chicago) and never played one of his songs and never had a request for one.
He was a media-hype creation like Tiny Tim. They believed they could force a moderately talented performer on the public by over-exposure. They made some money, but not like they thought, but he never had a top-selling song...ever.
Even Slim Whitman out-sold him by a mile.

Marvin Gaye, yes...and his name always reminds me of the great tribute song (and another of my alltime favorite groups) “Nightshift” by the Commodores...

Agreed! However, wasnt he in a group? McDonald is a great singer and all that, but he didn't belong in the Doobies.

Well...that’s your unprofessional opinion.
Did you mean by record sales, what you personally liked/like or actual God-gifted talent? Certainly, from your list, it is not “God-gifted” talent.
To: Liberty Valance
K D Lang
Hahahahaha...wicked. She would be on a great singer list, though....

Dean Martin
Perry Como
Frank Sinatra
Tom Jones
Hector LaVoe
Harry Connick Jr.
Marvin Gaye
Lionel Ritchie
Andrea Bocelli (would he be considered operatic?)
Josh Groban
All the others I can think of are operatic.

Doobie Brothers, but he has had more than enough of a solo career since then. And he is one of the finest backup singers ever. The stuff he did with Steely Dan is legendary.
More recently he released a bunch of Mo-Town stuff which was pretty good, but his solo stuff is amazing.

Does Mr. Jeff Beck count?
Why not? Especially
Blow By Blow through
Flash, though his last couple of albums were extremely interesting.
And, speaking of former Yardbirds guitarists in solo life, why not Eric Clapton, if you don't count a few clinkers along the way . . .

The stuff he did with Steely Dan is legendary. There was a funny SCTV skit featuring Michael running from studio to studio to sing a few backup lines. He'd go from Christopher Cross then run over to another studio, run back to Christopher Cross, etc.

I really enjoyed the theme tune he did for a movie. I think it was called “Running Scared”.
