Toys R Us is selling Ouija boards, promoting them as acceptable for children as young as eight years old.
The pink edition of the Ouija board is listed for girls eight-years-old and up while the regular version is designated for all children eight and up. Stephen Phelan, communications manager of Human Life International, checked the website and reports that the findings are disturbing.
"It is just troubling that these things are treated as casually as any other game, like Monopoly or anything else on this Toys R Us site -- and I think it's something Christians should be aware of and really not support," he states.
He further believes that Christians have an obligation to fight against it. "If you go to the comments section on the Toys R Us [web]site, you'll read comments from people who talk about being obsessed with it, talk about missing school for it, talk about the spirits they spoke to on the other side and how creepy it was," Phelan describes.
The communications manager adds that the primary groups that deny the evils of the Ouija board are the ones who deny the spirit world entirely. He goes on to say Christians have a biblical mandate.
"We're supposed to deal with the truth only," he notes. "We're supposed to have nothing to do with dark spirits. We're not supposed to dabble in anything that would compromise our souls, and that's exactly what this does."
The manufacturer of the product is Hasbro.

First, I’m not afraid of Ouija boards. I understand quite well they how they work, so I’m not going to be amazed when they work. The issue is whether they are fit for kids.
Second, you literally don’t even know the meaning of the word, “logic.” Logic often operates exactly contrary to sensibility.
>> The definition of LOGIC: sensible argument and thought: <<
Uh, no.
1. the science that investigates the principles governing correct or reliable inference.
2. a particular method of reasoning or argumentation: We were unable to follow his logic.
3. the system or principles of reasoning applicable to any branch of knowledge or study.
4. reason or sound judgment, as in utterances or actions: There wasn’t much logic in her move.
5. convincing forcefulness; inexorable truth or persuasiveness: the irresistible logic of the facts.
Suppose I declare that all donks are hoofahs, and billybray is a donk, therefore billybray is a donk, I am not being at all sensible. I am, however, being logical. If I explain that zeppelins are heavier than raspberries, I am describing something contrary to the senses, since zeppelins appear to have negative weight. I am, again, however, being logical.
Likewise, if I use an analog to make the point that harmless to a single person is not the same as being safe, I can be eminently logical by using an extreme example of something which is certainly unsafe, yet was harmless to one person.
Logic is a practice of gaining knowledge BEYOND what is sensible. Many things are sensible but not logical, such as things which bring inate joy. Many things are logical, but not sensible. Some things which are logical, but not sensible are true, such as complex mathematical proofs. Some things can be logical but not true, such as valid conclusions made based on faulty information.
LOL!
(This is the original one as made famous by Metallica's Kirk Hammett. It's no longer in production, the newest version of this guitar (white with Ouija graphic) can be found here but it'll cost you a pretty penny to purchase)
I have told of some of the experiences in other posts on this thread. Since you have asked, I will go into more detail.
Back in 1976 my wife dragged me to one of her friends' house for what some folks consider a party. About six women started messing around with a Ouija board, so I went to the other room in order to separate myself from the stupidity of the entertainment. The ladies were pretty loud, and I could overhear what they were saying. After a time I noticed that the responses they were getting from that "toy" did not sound like anything any of those ladies would know, nor were they framed in a manner characteristic of any of them. By the time I left that evening I was pretty sure that something unusual had occured.
I also became envolved with those sessions when we tinkered with the Ouija board in subsequent meetings. This became rather regular for about two years. As we spent more time with this, smaller groups of people could work the board, and even certain individuals could do it alone. We learned that the entities preferred that you call them a guide.
There were several instances of the group being told via the board what absent members were doing at the time; and, those tellings were accurate. There was also an instance when an absent member experienced a close call that could have resulted in injury, and this also turned out to be accurate and in real time.
Our group split, with another taking up their own board. We were able to send messages through our guide to them through their guide, word-for-word and with the same spellings. We conducted such a communications tests in real time over a distance of two hundred miles. There were no cell phones in those days and nobody in either group used a land line during the session.
Eventually I became capable of operating the pointer with no assistance, and even conducted these sessions in private. It seems that the connection to that realm improves with practice. That is when the horrific dreams started. It seemed in those dreams that something was trying to push me "out", presumably to gain direct control. It took some serious prayer to eliminate this percieved threat.
I am now fairly sensitive to things that don't seem normal. I was visited by my ex-wife's grandmother in a dream the night she died. She was inflicting torment upon me, demanding to know why I had rejected her "baby". The next morning my ex-wife called to tell me of her grandsmother's passing. A few years later I was tormented in my sleep by my ex-wife's father. He demanded to know the same thing. The next morning my ex-wife called to notify me of her father's passing.
The spirit world is very real. There is a life after death. I do not prescribe to any particular religion so much any longer, yet I know that sprituality is just as real as our world. (Assuming that this is real.) I am completely aware that there is great danger in that unkown world, and only through the efforts of things unseen are we safe.
>”The issue is whether they are fit for kids.”
And that, my friend, is up to the parents of those children, not you. If a person finds it’s reasonable to let their child play with one, that’s their decision.
Remember, the priests and judges in Salem, Mass. KNEW they were using reason and sound logic when attaching weights to an accused witch and throwing them in a pond. Reason would dictate that a witch would save herself by levitating, thus if she drowned, she was innocent.
As far as the issue with rasberries and blimps, I can give you provable, scientific evidence why blimps float and rasberries dont. What can you offer to prove that the ouija is controlled by, (cough) Satan? (I would hope it’s more than just a simple “feeling”) Now seriously, what if the ouija board is really controlled by God, and Satan has put these thoughts in your head to keep you from communicating with the Almighty? Ya know, the Son of Sam didnt need a ouija board to do evil, he just needed a dog.
Let me ask you a question. If you were king of the world, what would you do with ouija boards? Outlaw them? Ban them? Put people in jail who had one?
Some people may find the answer interesting (or frightening).
I have bad news for you. “Splrff” was my wife’s maiden name. And she ain’t going nowhere.
Having never used a board myself, why does it require a group?
When I was about 4 I had a dream about one of my great grandmothers. She was very old and lived in a trailer in another state. I may have met her two or three times in my short life.
In the dream I was in her trailer. It was night and I was standing by her bed. An eerie light was shining through the window, which was open but covered by a cream-colored silk cloth. A breeze was blowing through the window, enough to make the cloth flap.
My great grandmother was lying on the bed, which had the same sheets as the one on the window. I remember they had a sheen to them. The breeze was blowing the sheets, which would have been blown off the bed if they had not been tucked partially under her leg.
In the dream I was scared of her body, but for some reason I had to stay by the bed alone all night. In the morning I stepped out of the trailer, down the two steps, and into the morning sun. My mom went into the trailer and came out, telling everyone that great grandmother was dead.
In reality she died that night. I never told anyone my dream and when it occurred until I was in my 20’s. I’m 30 now, and I can’t believe how vivid it is to me still.
Anyway, sorry for the long story.
>> Remember, the priests and judges in Salem, Mass. KNEW they were using reason and sound logic when attaching weights to an accused witch and throwing them in a pond. Reason would dictate that a witch would save herself by levitating, thus if she drowned, she was innocent. <<
Err umm... “We should kill her if and only if she’s guilty. If we throw her in a pond, she’ll die if and only if she’s not guilty. Therefore, we should throw her in a pond.” No, that’s not logical at all. Mind you, logic can result in disastrous conclusions given untrue premises. By the way, you really should quit relying on Monty Python for your history or logic lessons. They didn’t have priests in Salem and they hanged suspected witches.
>> As far as the issue with rasberries and blimps, I can give you provable, scientific evidence why blimps float and rasberries dont. <<
You mean “reason,” not “evidence.” Evidence would be that they do float, not why they do float. Such evidence would be sensible, not logical. Logical would be the explanation for why they float despite being heavier than raspberries, which do not float. Knowing something through evidence is sensible. Using that evidence to reach a conclusion which is not evident is logical.
>> Now seriously, what if the ouija board is really controlled by God, and Satan has put these thoughts in your head to keep you from communicating with the Almighty? <<
If your premise is that Christianity is a lie, and some occult, pagan religion is true, it might be a logical to use a ouija board. But I’m not starting from that premise. And unless you are, you’re premise is invalid.
>> Ya know, the Son of Sam didnt need a ouija board to do evil, he just needed a dog. <<
So what’s your point. He also didn’t need heroin. Doesn’t make heroin a good idea. He didn’t even need Obama. Doesn’t make Obama a good idea.
>> Let me ask you a question. If you were king of the world, what would you do with ouija boards? Outlaw them? Ban them? Put people in jail who had one? Some people may find the answer interesting (or frightening). <<
Some people might find the premise frightening, so naturally they’ll find whatever conclusion you reach frightening. I dare say I wouldn’t even want me to be king of the world. I don’t think we should have a king of the world. Not until someone competent to be king of the world comes along. But I’ll infer you’ve got some faulty logic going on in that brain of yours. The fact that I don’t approve of ouija boards does not imply that I’d desire some totalitarian abolition of them. Although, grant you, if I’m somehow king of the world, I’ve implicitly banned elections (since you don’t become king by election), so I might as well go ahead and ban ouija boards. I also detest rap music, so I guess I’d ban that, too. And cauliflower. Why bother being king of the world if you can’t ban cauliflower. Or WWE wrestling. But since I don’t have any ambition to be king of the world, I guess no-one should bother finding my opinions about ouija boards to be frightening.
Nice emotionalistic red herring, though.
It requires a group because the movement is caused by changes in the net forces on the wand. If you are operating alone, you know you’re the sole cause of every movement of the wand, and there’s no trick to it. If you do it in a group, no one person can fully know all the forces on it. It’s in dissipating the responsibility throughout the group that enables the psychological trick to work.
HOWEVER
The more dissociated someone becomes from their own influence on the wand, the more external the wand’s behavior appears. Providing insight into subconscious desires becomes a reward for developing this psychologically dangerous dissociation. The user may actually convince themselves that some completely external force is responsible, allowing the dissociation to become coupled with an almost psychotic delusion.
And those dangers are even discounting the demonic dangers! According to the “magic,” the ouija board channels spirits to come among practitioners. If such spirits are demonic (and to whatever extent they are real, they would have to be demonic since divine spirits would not participate), this is merely inviting demonic influence. The spirit does not enter any given individual. However, when practiced alone, the spirit’s influence is only through a single person. Thus, the spirit comes to be entirely within a person. This, then, isn’t merely influence, but possession. Even ancient practitioners considered going solo to be taboo for this reason. (If you don’t believe in demonic possession, you could suppose this is merely an explanation for why solo practitioners went psychotic.)
Seems strange. I guess I have never tried because I never believed the wand was influenced by anything/one except the participants. Truly I believe in spirits, but just not that a whole group could be free enough to allow their influence.
Your story is compelling evidence that groups can do just that. Gives me a reason to not try.
Me go rejoin the adult world now.
You just carelessly forgot to mention the disinterested observers who monitored both the participants chosen at the last moment, as well as the contents of the messages, written at the last moment. Right?
Double blind my elbow!
Someone was pushing it. Gee, hard to figure out.
Right. Sure.
“I also have experience with those things. We were scientific with our experiments; and, verified that these things are not baseless. I do indead classify them as dangerous because they clearly open one up to spritual harm.
For you skeptic readers, one of the experiments was conducted as follows: Two groups of people separated by hundreds of miles were able to send messages through this medium. Message text was double blind and flawlessly delivered. Cell phones and even pagers had not been invented. There was no communication between these groups except the Ouija Boards. Validation occured when the paper with the transcribed message was returned to the parent”
Do you know you can collect $1,000,000 for repeating this piece of research?
If you don’t need the money you could always send it to Haiti.
