Ouija board a controversial toy for tots

Toys R UsToys R Us is selling Ouija boards, promoting them as acceptable for children as young as eight years old.

The pink edition of the Ouija board is listed for girls eight-years-old and up while the regular version is designated for all children eight and up. Stephen Phelan, communications manager of Human Life International, checked the website and reports that the findings are disturbing.

"It is just troubling that these things are treated as casually as any other game, like Monopoly or anything else on this Toys R Us site -- and I think it's something Christians should be aware of and really not support," he states.

Ouija boardHe further believes that Christians have an obligation to fight against it. "If you go to the comments section on the Toys R Us [web]site, you'll read comments from people who talk about being obsessed with it, talk about missing school for it, talk about the spirits they spoke to on the other side and how creepy it was," Phelan describes.

The communications manager adds that the primary groups that deny the evils of the Ouija board are the ones who deny the spirit world entirely. He goes on to say Christians have a biblical mandate.

"We're supposed to deal with the truth only," he notes. "We're supposed to have nothing to do with dark spirits. We're not supposed to dabble in anything that would compromise our souls, and that's exactly what this does."

The manufacturer of the product is Hasbro.

Until what...? A silly piece of wood. The same could be said of a deck of cards.

Paranormal stuff is having another resurgence on cable TV. Lots of reality type shows. I don’t watch them but I see the ads. Mostly baloney but not all of it. It can be real dangerous to mess with.

The Ouija board is a cardboard game. Its all BS. People need to lighten up. Geez.....

Yup! That's what I told myself too. Just a game, made out of plastic and cardboard. Anyone who believes otherwise is an idiot. My best friend and I would play this game all the time. Each time we asked "who is there", the board would spell out "EOT". Lol! We laughed out heads off. How silly that anyone should take this seriously. And then one day, with a group of friends, we assembled in one of their homes. It was a very hot July day. The girl's mother was outside hanging laundry. The house had no air conditioning. My friend and another girl began ... "who is there?" and the response was the same ... "EOT". We asked the usual stupid questions but suddenly the spindle hesitated. We kept asking "is anyone there?", but there was no response. "Stupid game", we all said. Then the spindle spelled out "WARNING". We joked ... accusing one of the girls of moving the spindle to those letters. She denied it. We didn't believe her. We kept pressing on "who is there?" and finally the spindle spelled out some unrecognizable name. We laughed again but meanwhile the house began to grow cold. The family cat walked in, arched its back, screeched and ran back outside. We laughed nervously. "Who are you?" we asked. The spindle moved so quickly that I could not keep track of the letters. Amazingly, it went back and retraced its steps. I will never forget the response. "Some call me by the name I just gave you but my preferred call me BEELZEBUB". Still unbelieving, we continued with the "game". My friend's mother walked in from the hot outdoors, noticed how cold it was in the house and put on a sweater. The exchange with the 'other side' continued with him offering to give her the one thing she most wanted, and then spelled out the name of a boy she had a crush on. There was only one other person in the room who knew that name and it was me and I was not working the board.

By then we were finally jolted out of our stupor and realized that this was real. The entity wanted everyone to leave the room in order to make arrangements with my friend to meet. We refused to leave. Finally, in a desperate measure, I asked my friends' 6 year old daughter to bring down her mother's rosary beads. We placed these on the spindle. Suddenly, the spindly rose and flew into the fireplace (obviously, there was no fire burning because it was summer).

Several years later, after we had all graduated from HS and moved on in life, I was watching some tv sitcom that involved a DJ who became locked in his booth. Eeerie organ music began to play but he could not stop it. Stupid, sill tv program, I thought. As the DJ helplessly looked on, a voice began to summon up the spirits of hades. I was only half heartedly listening, consumed with a project I was making. Odd names were called out and then, to my utter amazement, I heard the name "EOT". Shivers ran down my spine. I took the Ouija board and tossed it in the garbage.

Believe what you wish, but this is no simple game and should not be sold to unsuspecting children.

“Who is more clueless, the people who believe a Ouija board works or the people who are afraid of it?”

Then there are those who think it's all nonsense, try it and find out otherwise.

You should have kept at it, I guarantee you, something would have happened.

I don't need a Ouija board to have strange things happen in my life.

Not to stray too far off topic but I seem to have something that follows me. I guess you could call it a spirit. I don't really know. My wife thought me a bit crazy until she started to share in my experiences. Whatever or who ever it is, it isn't "evil" but more playful or just noisy. It's been around ever since I was a kid.

I dunno. It "reveals" itself in different ways a couple of times a year just to let us know it is still around.

...but I don’t buy the mind/soul/body thing...

I was the same until I observed those things in action. I'm 60 years old now; and, I have had numerous experiences that have convinced me that the spirit realm is real. I have degrees in physics, math, and computer science; so, I'm not fresh off the turnip truck.

My experiments with the Ouija board occured around 1975 after observing people play with it. I was angrily scoffing from the other side of the room until I heard some truely unusual things that were completely untypical of any of the ladies playing with the thing. Later I conducted experiments that culminated with transmitting messages over hundreds of miles ... one board/guide to another. After a few years I could operate the pointer without another person helping. That is when the scary stuff started happening.

I'm smart enough that most people tend to stay away from me. That is one of the curses of being too smart in American society. I don't fool easily, and I know what I saw and what I have experienced.

What you do with it is channeling,a deliberate attempt to break down the barrier to the paranormal/spirit plane I don’t see what good can come of that.

What if you think of your soul as software and your mind has hardware that allows it to run in this realm.

>”You need a refresher in logic.”

“The definition of LOGIC: sensible argument and thought: sensible rational thought and argument rather than ideas that are influenced by emotion or whim.”

By comparing the drug heroine, which is a tangible substance, to a childs game, which you are emotionally afraid of, you are literally comparing apples to oranges.

No one is going to dispute that the drug is physically addictive and damaging, yet there is simply no evidence that the ouija board causes any kind of harm/damage.

If you can present me with any kind of physical evidence that the ouija board causes physical/emotional harm, I’ll admit I’m wrong. (BTW, do I need to offer that I can present you with evidence about heroine?)

What if you think of your soul as software and your mind has hardware that allows it to run in this realm.

Assume that there is also an "operating system", and you may be catching on. Also assume that there are other systems in operation and that there are communications facilities between them.

Maybe you should also assume that you can be “check pointed” while another program is loaded to run on your platform.
