Chukar and partridge limits, seasons reduced (Idaho)

Under new rules, hunters will have 12 fewer days and the daily bag limit will be cut by two birds per person.

The decision by the Idaho Fish and Game Commission on Thursday was the only major change to the upland bird hunting rules, which are set every two years.

Chukar and hungarian partridge season will run from Oct. 1 to Jan. 31 through the 2011-12. The daily bag limits is six of each species, and the possession limit is 12 each.

"I've had lots of phone calls and letters from avid chukar hunters who felt there's been a decline in the (chukar) population," commission chair Wayne Wright of Twin Falls said. "I think it's important to work directly with sportsmen and pay attention to their concerns."

Idaho is fiddling with various hunting and fishing regs.

Posting this as Chukar hunting is my primary hunting pastime in the fall and as notice to hunters that might come to Idaho to bag these evil incarnate birds.

I did a stint up at the Flying B in Kamiah (sp?) Absolute beautiful country and one helluva hunting club. Great folks and a great time was had by all. The best part about it? The buffaloe’d (spicy) Chukar appetizers they served, I’ve had dreams about that stuff....mmmmmmmmmm. Lord, that was some good eating.

Sounds like the biologist's didn't want to have to admit it may be a habitat problem that wasn't being addressed correctly.

Fun Fact: The hungarian partridge is actually native to western Ukraine. That area used to be part of Poland, which in turn was part of the Hungarian side of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Somehow out of all that the label “hungarian” is what stuck. The Emperor Franz Joseph is reputed to have shot as many as a quarter of a million of them during his life time.

“evil incarnate birds”

Having hunted these birds before, Patrick McManus is spot on when he writes about them. These birds love to try to kill me. I try to convince my younger friends to climb up to the top and scare them down to me, but I am not convincing enough.
