Fluids, Less Friction, and More Anger Between the Yacht Clubs (America's Cup)
CupInfo.com ^ | 1/28/2010 | CupInfo

Jan 28: Fred Meyer, Vice-Commodore of the America's Cup Defending yacht club Société Nautique de Genève (SNG), issued a strongly worded response to the latest round of legal and public relations documents published by the challenger. Calling the latest statements issued by Golden Gate YC a "tirade", SNG threatened to forfeit the America's Cup Thursday if SNG does not prevail in court. Excerpt from SNG Statement: "We have been clear: if BMW Oracle succeeds in disqualifying the Defender’s sails then there will be no Match, Russell Coutts will have won the America’s Cup for Larry Ellison without sailing." Meyer also accused the challenger's yacht of breaking rules by releasing a friction reducing fluid into the water from their yacht as it sails.

GGYC Response: Golden Gate responds that SNG/Alinghi themselves specifically eliminated the rule against friction reducing fluids from the Racing Rules of Sailing for this match, and while declining to reveal the nature of the technology BMW Oracle's yacht USA is using, the challenger says the fluid is environmentally safe. Manolo Ruiz de Elvira, BMW Oracle design team member, said that it makes "an already fast boat even faster."

You have to say “Yacht Club” just right to fit in.

No way to represent it phonetically, you have to hear it spoken by a true blue blood, with closed teeth and tongue close to the roof of the mouth.

Ya either got it, or ya do don’t.

It saddens me that , as a non-blue blood, I will never get to release my fluids into the water.

Things have gone too far here! They don't look like boats anymore, they are big plastic toys full of machinery.

I crewed on a 65 foot Alden schooner built by Electric Launch in 1917, she was almost a living thing. The new cup contenders are anything but!

The HydroSpeed Magic Fluid, modern yacht racing's most jealously guarded secret, is still available at Gooch Hardware, in Kennebunkport.

It is expensive, at $189.50 per pint, but well worth it. While racing my Thistle after a treatment with the Magic Fluid, I was doing 37.5 knts downwind in an 11-knot breeze, when the small yacht actually became airborne. Unfortunately, the committee, aghast at my unusual tactic, signaled me to do 10 360's, and I wound up coming in second, costing me the series trophy.

The Livermore Falls firm that manufactures HydroSpeed Magic Fluid is having marketing problems, having based their sales program on the unique talents of the late Billy Mays. However, if you will forward credit card information, I think I can get a few pints from Mr. Gooch for you and your club.

I am throwing in a free set of Sham-Wows, which are needed to apply HydroSpeed Magic Fluid, with the first 10 orders. Today only. Order now!

This race has become all about technology, and less about skill. Friction-reducing fluids? super-secret sails?

I used to love watching Americas Cup. Not any more.

This is not a double post. I, filling in for the sadly departed Billy Mays, am seeking to increase ad frequency.

New to the ad game, I also forgot to add the mandatory warning copy.

If your yacht remains airborne for more than 4 hours,
report it immediately to a Coast Guard Medical Officer.

When did Lake Geneva become an “arm of the sea”? How can an inland yacht club compete in the Americas Cup? Or did they change that rule?

Alden’s boats were some of the prettiest boats ever designed. Herreshoff’s were no slouches either. sd

I have read that the races will be broadcast on the internet, but not sure where yet:

“For the first time in history, the races will be broadcast live and free of charge through americascup.com to reach the biggest, widest possible audience, including all the fans who will not be able to be in Valencia to witness live this historic competition.”
