The most popular pooches in America
sfgate ^

Posted on 01/28/2010 1:38:35 PM PST by JoeProBono

For the 19th consecutive year, the Labrador Retriever has held on to its title as America's "Top Dog," according to the American Kennel Club's (AKC) 2009 registration statistics.

In a nod to watchdog breeds, the German Shepherd Dog overtook the Yorkshire Terrier to claim the spot of "second most popular pooch" for the first time in more than three decades. An American favorite since the time of Rin Tin Tin, the German Shepherd Dog became the number one breed of the 1920s, but then slipped in popularity until after World War II.

The German Shepherd Dog isn't the only working canine to sniff out a place in the Top 10. Labradors, Golden Retrievers and Beagles have all been employed by law enforcement military and homeland security personnel to help with border patrol, bomb and narcotics detection and searching for missing persons.

Here is the AKC's Top 10 list of most popular dogs for 2009:

* 1. Labrador Retriever* * 2. German Shepherd Dog * 3. Yorkshire Terrier * 4. Golden Retriever * 5. Beagle * 6. Boxer * 7. Bulldog * 8. Dachshund * 9. Poodle * 10. Shih Tzu*

All my dogs have been strays. All have been most loyal and loving.

Anyone who can just dump animals or mistreat them should be locked up. There was a case on tv last night near Austin where animals were so badly treated they had to be picked up. Animals had died and pigs were eating the bodies. A puppy had died in a cage and had been left there for quite some time. There are times when an eye for an eye is justice.

Currently my wife and I have 2 mini-doxies.
Freyja (ancient Germanic or Norse Goddesses of Love) and she is a little love puppy. My daughter named her after writing a paper for her high school mythology class. Freyja’s coat is fairly unique she is dappled grey & black with a little brown muzzle & a large white spot on her chest. (Looks like a bib!) she is 5 now so not really a puppy, but loves people and squeals like a banshee when I come home from work.
Our newest is a male we named Tiger because of his coat, he is read with a hint of black stripes like a tiger. He is now 5 months old.

We had a standard named Thunor (the Germanic Thor) again my daughter and her mythology paper. We also thought he needed a name to grow into. The first day we had him a butterfly chased him into the house. He was jet black with a brown muzzle and was 20% larger then a normal standard, he was almost basset hound in size. He was a big lovable goof, unfortunately last November the day before Thanksgiving we found him dead in his bed. The Vet said heart attack or stroke, I didn't feel like paying for an autopsy. It wouldn't have changed anything. Maybe it was because he was such a big horse of a dachshund that he died young. He was 6 years old. He was one of those dogs that had to be involved in everything you were doing. It didn't matter, typing on the computer, reading a book, watching TV he was right there trying to participate. He also was the most vocal dog I have ever had, you could have conversations with him. He would look at you and make little vocalizations, little barks, friendly growls, yips and then give you looks like “Boy are you dumb I was perfectly clear!”. He would poke you with his nose, whatever it took for him to get his point or need communicated. I have never had a dog that was so expressive. Thunor was not an annoying barker, in fact for a dachshund when it came to barking he was somewhat quiet. He just had things to say! . He is really missed!

If you want all out devotion, a lab is the way to go.

Yes they get fat, yes they aren't always the smartest, but when their tails start going, and you know deep in your heart that there is no where your pet would rather be than with you, it makes you a believer.

There is a reason they are the number one breed.

I’m currently hosting a Thai Ridgeback. Never saw one before this refugee arrived. Only thing I could think of when I saw her was “Basenji” (my brother had one).

My Dad was a vet and worked with hundreds of dogs over his career. He always said border collies were the smartest.

The best thing he could say about poodles is that they were smart before the breeders got ahold of them and bred more nose in and more brains out.

Thunor sounds allot like My Lil Man Too.
Sad you lost him so young.
My Lil Man is a standard, deep reddish coffee.

I bought a bunch of beads last year to start up a new hobby.

LOL As you well know that hasnt happened yet.
Pokey nose wont allow anything to come in between us that would distract me.

I can see him maturing and giving me more space though.

The only time Lil Man barks is when making the 2 labs do the Doggie(beds) Cake walk game.
And to insist they give him their bone.

Yeah Doxies are real charactors.
Great companions and lotsa laughs.

I used to teach obedience classes. All the standard poodles I had in class were quite bright. They were silly clowns, but very bright. Border collies are smart, but that is not nec a plus in all instances. If they are not working they can be quite a handful.

My current dog, Charlie the Shih Tzu, Has to be the greatest dog i have ever owned. (No offense to my other dogs)

Combination of loving, playfulness, he loves to play fight, manners, loves all people, awesome with kids, can let him out my back door to pee and not worry about him leaving the yard, Cuddleness, no shedding, no drooling, etc.

His only bad habit is his obsession with human food.
drives me nuts. Since he’s stuck to me like glue 24/7 i van’t even eat a simple snack at my pc without dealing with all the dog drama.
